Jay Brannan (born March 29, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter and actor.

Early life and career

Jay Brannan was born in Houston, Texas. He later studied acting at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati for two semesters. Brannan then moved to California, first to Palm Springs and then later to Los Angeles. Jay currently resides in New York, where he has lived for five years.[1]

Music career

Brannan built his music career by performing songs in his studio apartment and posting them on Youtube and on his personal web site. In March 2007, Brannan provided four of his songs for sale on Myspace. These were followed by his first EP "Unmastered" and his first full length album Goddamned, produced by Will Golden, released on iTunes July 1, 2008. The CD, available through his own label Great Depression Records, shipped on July 15th.[2] and reached number 1 on the iTunes Folk Chart.

Brannan made an international tour, to Ireland and the UK, in August and September 2008 supported by fellow Shortbus cast member, Bitch.

Brannan's next single "The Freshman" became available on iTunes on June 16th 2009. This was followed on July 7th with the release of In Living Cover; a collection of seven cover versions and two original tracks.

Discography

Acting career

Brannan, who is openly gay,[3] won a part in John Cameron Mitchell's film Shortbus after sending in an audition tape.[4][5][6][3] In Shortbus, he plays a character named Ceth who performs one of his own songs, "Soda Shop"[7] a song which appears on the film's soundtrack. The film also includes graphic depictions of gay sexual activity of which Brannan participated in a three-way with a gay couple.[7][8]

He subsequently appeared as Jake in the 2007 film Holding Trevor.[9]

Wikipedia controversy

Brannan has openly and adamantly contested Wikipedia as an accurate source of information, and strongly opposes the existence of his article on the Wikipedia site, as well as those that maintain tight control of its content, for their own political agendas (according to Brannan).

He has repeatedly publicly stated that his Wikipedia article frequently contains inaccurate information, and upon trying to correct such errors, the administrators always revert the article to the version they prefer.

Brannan has also openly stated his annoyance with his sexual orientation being used as an appositive after his name, as part of what Brannan claims is the political agenda of those closely controlling the content of his article.

Brannan recommends that those who wish to learn about him or his work should do so by visiting Brannan's self-run websites, not by reading articles written by complete strangers who have never met Brannan and are misinformed about the facts of his life and career, or even journalists, who also often misreport facts.
