There were repeated confrontations between Palestine’s Jewish community and Jewish terrorists. In response, the shocked and revolted Jewish community hunted down terrorists relentlessly, turning over more than 700 names to the British.

Jewish terrorism is used to describe the violent actions of extremist Zionists such as the Stern Gang prior to the establishment of the state of Israel [1][2], and the anti-arab[3] behavior of Jewish settlers in Hebron and other areas of the West Bank.[4]. is religious terrorism committed by Jews who interpret Judaism to justify violence. Militant messianic Zionists used religious claims to the historical land of Israel to justify acts of violence.[5]

Before the State of Israel

There were repeated confrontations between Palestine’s Jewish community and Jewish terrorists. A famous one followed the 1944 murder in Cairo of Lord Moyne, the British minister-resident in the Middle East, by the terrorist Stern Gang. In response, the shocked and revolted Jewish community hunted down terrorists relentlessly, turning over more than 700 names to the British.

There were truces too, when the Jewish authorities (desperately outgunned and outnumbered in their war for independence) tried to co-opt two terrorist groups, the Stern Gang and the Irgun, into the regular army. But the Sternists and the Irgun invariably returned to terror, shattering the truce.

Jewish terrorism was stamped out at last after a U.N. mediator was assassinated in late 1948. Israel’s new Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion ordered: “Arrest all Stern Gang leaders. Surround all Stern bases. Confiscate all arms. Kill any who resist.” Soon afterward, the Irgun also bit the dust.[6]

Settlers

According to the Israeli Newspaper Haaretz, "settlers espouse clear-cut racist values, utter profanities, spit, beat, sow ruin and destruction, while the army turns a blind eye in the best-case scenario and takes part in the worst". [7]

Attacks on Israeli soldiers and Palestinian civilians by West Bank settlers, nearly doubled from 291 incidents in 2007 to 222 in the first half of 2008, according to a recent UN report. In the middle of 2008 the number of attacks has skyrocketed. Israeli attempts to evacuate West Bank outposts in Yitzhar, Yad Yair, and Shvut Ami were met by groups of settlers-many of them teenagers-throwing stones, yelling curses, vandalizing cars, and worse.[8]

In a hearing following a pipe bomb attack on Professor Zeev Sternhell, Knesset's Committee for Internal Affairs, Chairman Ophir Pines-Paz stated plainly: "we are calling this an act of terror because that is precisely what it is, especially when it pertains to an ideological debate on the direction Israel is going. . . . We have to take very firm action. These are terrorists-Jewish, but terrorists just the same."[9]

Extremist Religious Organizations

The following groups were all started or branched off from those started by Meir Kahane in the 1970s. Kahanist groups are banned in Israel[10][11][12]:

A new 'Jewish underground' is thought by some to be behind the 25 September 2008 pipe bombing of Zeev Sternhell, a political scientist at Jerusalem's Hebrew University.[14] The attack has been likened to the grenade attack that killed Emil Grunzweig.[15]
