Kevin Systrom (born December 30, 1983)[2] is an American entrepreneur and software engineer, who is best known as the co‑founder of Instagram.

Life and career

Systrom was born in Holliston, Massachusetts, and is the son of Diane (Pels), a marketing executive, and Douglas Systrom, a president in human resources.[2][3][4] Systrom attended Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, and graduated in 2006 from Stanford University with a B.S. in management science and engineering.[5] At Stanford, he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He co-founded Instagram in 2010 with Mike Krieger. He also founded Burbn, an HTML5-based location-sharing service.

He got his first taste of the startup world when was a member of the Mayfield Fellows Program at Stanford University which led to his internship at Odeo, the company that eventually gave rise to Twitter. He spent two years at Google; during the first, he worked on Gmail, Google Reader, and other products, and during the second he worked on the Corporate Development team.[6]

After leaving Google, he co‑founded the photo-sharing service Instagram.[7] In April 2012, Instagram was sold to Facebook for $1 billion in cash and stock.[8] According to multiple reports, the deal netted Systrom $400 million based on his ownership stake in the business.[9] The actual amount Facebook had to pay to acquire Instagram was later adjusted to $715 million. The price was image share related and these dropped when the takeover was announced.
