Lost Ark[a] is a top-down 2.5D fantasy massively multiplayer online action role-playing game (MMOARPG).[2][3] It is co-developed by Tripod Studio and Smilegate's game development subsidiary Smilegate RPG.[4] It was fully released in the South Korean region on December 4, 2019.[5] The game was also released in North America, South America, and Europe on February 11, 2022, where it is published by Amazon Games.[2][6][7] Within twenty-four hours of release, it became the second most played game on Steam.[8][9]

Lost Ark won six game awards in various categories at the Korea Game Awards 2019.[10] Developing the game cost about $85.4 million.[11]

Gameplay

Lost Ark gameplay

Lost Ark is primarily focused on PvE and exploration (questing, achievement/collectible hunting, crafting, etc.), but features PvP elements as well.[12] Players start by customizing their character which they can then level up by completing the storyline.[13] Reaching level 50 unlocks access to tiered endgame dungeons and raids, at which point all further progress is tied to the character's gear score.[citation needed]

Development

Lost Ark's development began in 2011[14] under the codename Project T.[15][16]

The game uses Unreal Engine 3 to render 3D characters in an isometric environment.[17] It supports DirectX 9[18][19] and was updated to support DirectX 11 prior to the western release in 2022.[20]

Release

Lost Ark was fully released in the South Korean region on December 4, 2019.[5] It is in open beta in the Russian region, and open for closed beta registration in Japan as of June 25, 2020.[3]

The game was released on February 11, 2022 as a free-to-play title with servers in North America, South America, and Europe, with Amazon Games serving as the global publisher. Users that pre-purchased one of four founder's packs could play 3 days early on February 8, 2022.[21][22][23][24] The game is unavailable in Belgium and the Netherlands owing to some of its in-game reward systems' incompatibility with their loot box legislation.[25]

Reception

Lost Ark received "generally favorable" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic.[26]

PC Magazine praised Lost Ark's combat, writing, "Abilities look good, sound sufficiently powerful, and feel great to use. You can’t help but feel like a combat god when you divekick a crowd, and blast fodder monsters into bloody chunks."[36] Despite enjoying some of the minigames, Rock Paper Shotgun disliked the game's structure and felt, compared to other MMOs, Lost Ark had little to offer: "Some may relish the chores, the gradual progress of the EXP bar, and the allure of shiny loot rewards... Yet, there's nothing I've seen so far in the game's questing and progression that makes it stand out from the competition."[38] PC Gamer liked the combat abilities, but criticized the story: "Lost Ark can be a captivating adventure, which makes it a shame that the main story is simply not that compelling. The central cast of characters are a largely one-dimensional carousel of exhaustingly noble heroes and villains."[33] The game (in its Western version) has also been frequently criticized for its massive infestation by bots.[39]
