Małgorzata Jamroży (born 30 June 1991), known by her stage name Margaret, is a Polish singer-songwriter with a degree in fashion design.[2] She began her musical career in 2009 as the vocalist for the band oNieboLepiej. Later she was the vocalist for the Gosia Jamroży Project, appeared in a musical, recorded songs for TV commercials, and became a fashion blogger.

She gained national and international recognition in 2013 after the release of her debut single, "Thank You Very Much", which was later included on her first EP All I Need. The song charted in the top fifty in Austria, Germany, and Italy. In Poland it was the third best-selling digital single of 2013. Margaret's debut studio album, Add the Blonde, was released in 2014. It peaked at number eight in Poland and was certified platinum by the Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry (ZPAV). The album contained two top ten hits, "Wasted" and "Start a Fire" (the official song for 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship), as well as a top fifteen single "Heartbeat". Its 2016 re-issue produced two more singles, "Cool Me Down" and "Elephant"; the foremost peaked at number four in Poland, becoming Margaret's highest charting single in the country, and was certified double platinum by ZPAV. It also went on to become a top forty hit in Sweden where it was certified gold by the Swedish Recording Industry Association (GLF). In 2015, Margaret recorded a collaborative jazz album with Matt Dusk titled Just the Two of Us, which was certified platinum by ZPAV.

The singer has won a number of awards, including two MTV Europe Music Awards, a Kids' Choice Award, and four Eska Music Awards. In 2014, she was included on the list of 100 Most Valuable Stars of Polish Show Business compiled by the Polish edition of Forbes magazine.[3] The list is equivalent to the Forbes Celebrity 100 list.

Early years

Margaret was born in Stargard Szczeciński, to teachers Ryszard Jamroży and Elżbieta Jamroży.[4] The singer has a brother Tomasz, four years her senior, with whom she grew up in Ińsko.[4] She adopted the name "Julita" as her confirmation name.[5]

The singer attended the Schools Complex in Ińsko,[6] and graduated from XIV Liceum ogólnokształcące in Szczecin.[7] She is also a graduate of Ignacy Jan Paderewski 1st degree State Music School in Choszczno, where she studied clarinet and saxophone.[8] After completing matura (secondary school), Margaret moved to Warsaw where she continued with English studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for three semesters. After resigning, she chose to study fashion design at the International School of Costume and Fashion Design in Warsaw, graduating in 2015 with a degree in fashion design.[2]

Musical career

Career beginnings

Margaret's career began during her senior year as a singer-songwriter in the band oNieboLepiej (Much Better), formed in early January 2009.[9] In the same year, Margaret won the 254th episode of the Polish reality-singing competition show Szansa na sukces (Chance for Success), performing "Znam Cię na pamięć", originally sung by Monika Brodka. She also performed in the main, annual concert at the Congress Hall in Warsaw.[10] In 2010, she starred in the musical Rent at the Szczecin Opera in the Castle.[11] Margaret has also been the singer-songwriter of the Gosia Jamroży Project (also known as the Margaret J. Project), a band she co-created, and with whom she performed at the semi-finals of the Coke Live Fresh Noise 2010 competition.[12] She also recorded songs for Polish TV commercials and provided vocals for the biopic Bokser.[13][14]

2012–2013: "Thank You Very Much" and All I Need

Margaret in 2015

In 2012, she participated in the Trendy contest, during the 2012 TOPtrendy Festival at Sopot's Forest Opera amphitheatre, performing her debut single, "Thank You Very Much",[15] a sleeper hit which did not have a major impact until the release of its music video in 2013. Margaret collaborated with award-winning director Chris Marrs Piliero (who previously worked with The Black Keys, Britney Spears, and Kesha) to create a controversial music video, in which she was surrounded by thirty naked extras, to accompany the song.[16][17] This resulted in the video being banned from YouTube. It was later restored, with age restrictions, to her official channel.[18] With this work, Margaret expressed her support for the right to nudity under the slogan "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity".[19] She defended her position by saying that: "even though YouTube, considered one of the leading defenders for freedom of speech of the 21st century, censored the video, I'm happy that my fans are able to understand it in another way."[19]

After the release of the music video the song became an instant hit in Poland. It was officially released for digital download on 21 February 2013, and went on to become the third best-selling digital single of 2013 in Poland.[20] The single has also reached number forty-one on the official singles chart in Germany, number thirty-eight in Austria and number twenty-two in Italy.[21][22][23]

Margaret's second single, "Tell Me How Are Ya", was released on 9 July 2013.[24] In the summer of 2013, the singer participated in the tour organised by Radio ZET and TVP2 – Lato Zet i Dwójki.[25] She was also included in the lineup for the 2014 and 2015 editions of the tour.[26][27] In late July, she represented Poland at the 2013 Baltic Song Contest in Sweden,[28] where she sang "Thank You Very Much" and "I Get Along", finishing in second place.[29] Her debut EP All I Need was released on 30 July. It debuted and peaked at number fifty on the OLiS chart.[30]

Margaret was nominated in several categories at the Eska Music Awards 2013, including Best Female Artist, Best Hit (for "Thank You Very Much"), Best Music Video ("Thank You Very Much"), and Best Debut, winning an award for Best Music Video.[31][32] She was also nominated for Best Polish Act at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards.[33] In December, she embarked on a promotional tour of Italy.[34]

2014–present: Add the Blonde, Just the Two of Us and "Cool Me Down"

Margaret in 2014

On 31 December 2013, Margaret premiered "Wasted" with a live performance of the song at the Sylwestrowa Moc Przebojów (New Year's Eve Power of Hits) concert in Gdynia, Poland.[35] On 15 January 2014, the song was released for digital download and served as the lead single for Margaret's debut studio album.[36] The single peaked at number six on the Polish Airplay Chart.[37]

In the summer of 2014, Margaret collaborated with Thomas Karlsson and Mats Tärnfors to create the official song of the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in Poland.[38][39] "Start a Fire" was performed by Margaret at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Opening Ceremony on 30 August in front of 62,000 spectators in the National Stadium, Warsaw, prior to the Poland v. Serbia match. The event was broadcast in over 168 countries.[40][41] "Start a Fire" peaked at number ten on the Polish Airplay Chart.[37] Around that time Margaret also recorded a theme song for the Polish TV series O mnie się nie martw titled "O mnie się nie martw". The song is a cover of Katarzyna Sobczyk's song of the same name.[42]

Margaret's debut studio album Add the Blonde was released on 24 August 2014. It reached number eight on the Polish Albums Chart[43][44] and has received a platinum certification from the Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry (ZPAV).[45] In September, the singer won Glamour Women of the Year Award.[46]

Margaret's next single, "Heartbeat", was released in the first half of 2015 and peaked at number eleven on the Polish Airplay Chart.[37] In April 2015, the singer performed at the Top Music Wembley festival, held at the Wembley Arena in London.[47] In August, she won two Eska Music Awards for the Best Female Artist and Best Artist in Web.[48] At the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards, she won the award for Best Polish Act and, as a result, received a nomination for Worldwide Act: Europe.[49]

In 2015, she also collaborated with Canadian jazz singer Matt Dusk on an album of jazz standards called Just the Two of Us. It was released on 6 November, and peaked at number twenty-eight on the Polish Albums Chart.[43][50] The album was certified platinum by ZPAV.[45]

Margaret at Sommarkrysset in 2016

In February 2016, it was announced that Margaret would compete in Krajowe Eliminacje 2016, Poland's national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.[51] She performed the song "Cool Me Down" and finished in second place,[52] despite being bookies' and Eurovision fans' favourite to win both the national final and the whole Eurovision Song Contest.[53][54] "Cool Me Down" reached number four on the Polish Airplay Chart[37] and was certified double platinum by ZPAV.[45] In March, Margaret won Kids' Choice Award for Favourite Polish Star.[55]

In April, "Cool Me Down" was released worldwide via Warner Music Group,[51] and became a moderate hit in Sweden, where it peaked at number thirty-six[56] and was certified gold by the Swedish Recording Industry Association (GLF) for sales of 20,000 units.[57]

On 26 August, at Eska Music Awards 2016, Margaret premiered "Elephant", and also went on to win an award for Best Artist in Web.[58] "Elephant" was released as a single on 27 August.[59] The song peaked at number twenty-one on the Polish Airplay Chart.[37] She won her second MTV Europe Music Award for Best Polish Act on 3 November.[60] The re-issue of her debut studio album Add the Blonde was released on 2 December.[61]

Other ventures

In 2014, Margaret began an ongoing collaboration with Play, a Polish cellular telecommunications provider, as one of their faces.[62]

In 2015, she appeared in two Coca-Cola advertising campaigns in Poland, for which she also recorded, respectively, a Polish version of Robin Beck's "First Time" titled "Smak radości", and a Christmas song "Coraz bliżej święta" recorded with the finalists of 6th season of The Voice of Poland.[63][64] In 2015 and 2016, she was featured in Deichmann' advertising campaigns in Poland.[65][66] In September 2015, a clothing line designed by her for Sinsay, a fashion retailer, has been released under the name "Margaret for Sinsay".[67] In the autumn of that year, she co-hosted Retromania, a musical TV show broadcast by TVP1.[68]

On 15 October 2016, she joined the judging panel for Poland's national selection for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2016.[69]
