Mukesh Khanna is an Indian television and film actor best known for his portrayal of Shaktimaan in the titular Doordarshan television serial, and Bhishma Pitamah in B. R. Chopra's Mahabharat. He was also the chairman of Children's Film Society India from which he resigned in February 2018.[1][2][3][4]

Career

Mukesh entered the film industry after graduating from Film and Television Institute of India. He attended the school with fellow Indian actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shakti Kapoor.[5] He rose to fame and is still best known for playing Bhisma Pitamah in B. R. Chopra's Mahabharat. Khanna starred as the protagonist in the superhero series Shaktimaan

Khanna worked in the television series Aryamaan – Brahmaand Ka Yodha as the character of the same name. Khanna has worked in many television productions and films depicting him as police inspector such as in the film Hera Pheri. He has also worked in the television series Waqt Bataye Ga. He has played roles in films such as Tahalka and International Khiladi. He played the father of Bobby Deol's character in the film Barsaat.

Khanna was offered the role of Shantanu in Ekta Kapoor's Kahaani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki; he refused. He told the press that Ekta's Mahabharat is sure to be a flop because BR Chopra's Mahabharat had actors in it; her Mahabharat has "models" in it.[6] Throughout his acting career he appeared in several TV operas like Bahadur Shah Zafar(1986), Mahabharat (1988 TV series), Yug (TV series), Chandrakanta (TV series), Mahayoodha, Virat , Shaktimaan(1997) , Aryamaan – Brahmaand Ka Yodha(2002) & also many commercially successful movies, including Saudagar (1991), Yalgaar (1992), Tahalka (1992), Shaktiman (1993), Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Barsaat (1995), Raja (1995) Policewala Gunda(1995) , Veer (1995), Himmat (1996), Maidan-E-Jung (1995), Judge Mujrim (1997), Hera Pheri (2000) and Plan (2004).

There were numerous requests after the end of the Shaktimaan series, to bring it back, because they stated that they had been 'emotionally associated' with the show.

Mukesh Khanna finally announced on his YouTube channel 'Bheeshm International', that the series would be brought back in a 3D animated format. And after that, it would be revived as a live-action series, too.

He, in Comic Con India 2019, launched the teaser of the show, on 7th December 2019.

Other work

In 2007, Khanna participated in a child development project funded by the government, Shaktimaan, which targeted at preventing malnutrition, lowering the mother-child mortality rate, anaemia in girls and health awareness.[7]

Khanna operates acting schools in Jaipur, Agra and Bihar[5] and has spoken about opening more. He also teamed with his former acting school, Film and Television Institute of India, for a three-month acting course.[8]

Mukesh also had a YouTube channel - Mukesh Khanna, but it became defunct.[9] He now runs a YouTube channel Bheeshm International.[10]
