Nam Woo-hyun (Korean: 남우현; Hanja: 南優賢; born February 8, 1991),[1] commonly known by his stage name Woohyun (우현) is a South Korean singer, songwriter and actor. He is a member of Infinite under Woollim Entertainment.[2]
Biography
Nam Woo Hyun was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. He is currently majoring in Applied Music at Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts.[3] He has an older brother, Nam Boo Hyun. Boo Hyun is the owner of a popular BBQ restaurant, 먹&삼 생고기집, located in Suyu, Seoul.[4]
In an interview with 10asia, Woohyun revealed he originally aspired to be a soccer player.[5] However, he could not pursue this dream and eventually realized his dream of becoming a singer when he was in high school, and auditioned at Woollim Entertainment to pursue a career in music as a solo singer.[6] He passed the audition with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Lately" and was taken in as an idol trainee. He admitted being a little disappointed but worked hard to practice dancing instead.[7]
Prior to debuting with Infinite, Woohyun was a model for a shopping mall alongside Beast's Jun-hyung and T-ara's Ji-yeon.[8] He also competed in the 6th Hello Star Contest performing Lee Hyori's U Go Girl.[9] In one of his first broadcast appearances, he played the lead role in KooPD's music video for 귀가 멀어 in 2007.[10] Later in 2009, he appeared on Mnet's 소녀펀치 (Girl Punch) and sang Lee Seung-gi's 하기 힘든 말 (Words that are hard to say).[11]
Well known for his fan service, Woohyun once spent 3 million won to gift fans silver rings and flowers during INFINITE's 2013 world tour, One Great Step.[12]
Music career
Infinite
Woohyun made his debut in 2010 as the main vocalist of Infinite. He made first appearance as a group member of Infinite with released "Come Back Again"for mini album "First Invasion".
Toheart
On February 20, 2014 SM Entertainment released a prologue teaser announcing Toheart, a special unit duo consisting of Woohyun and Key of Shinee.[13] A second prologue teaser was released on February 27.[14] Following that, a music video teaser was released on 4 March 2014.[15] The duo's mini-album track preview video was released on March 6.[16] Toheart debuted with Delicious on March 10[17] and made their live debut on March 12 during their MelOn Premiere Showcase.[18]
Other activities
In September 2011, it was announced that Woohyun would be joining Immortal Songs 2 as a fixed member.[19] His first performance on the show was aired on October 1. On November 1, it was announced that he would be leaving the show due to Infinite's upcoming Japanese promotions.[20] His final episode aired on November 5.
In December 2012, Woohyun was selected to be part of one of SBS's Gayo Daejun 2012 project teams, Dramatic Blue,[21] along with Beast's Yoseob, 2AM's Jo Kwon, MBLAQ's G.O, and Teen Top's Niel. Under the banner 'The Color of K-pop', Dramatic Blue released and performed the track "Tearfully Beautiful", produced by Sweetune.[22]
Early 2013, he took part in Re;code,[23] a duet project with Korean indie pop singer, Lucia, covering Epitone Project's "선인장" (Cactus).[24]
His OST for the SBS drama Modern Farmer 사랑이 올 때 (When Love Comes) was released digitally on October 24, 2014.[25]
Acting Career
Musicals
Woohyun made his debut as a musical actor, along with band member Sung Gyu, in the musical "Gwanghwamun Sonata",[26] playing the role of Ji-yong, the son of female lead, Yeo-joo, from January 3 to March 11, 2012. He reprised the role again in Japan from January 4 to January 6, 2013.
Drama
Woohyun made his acting debut in July 2012 when he was cast in a minor role in the drama The Thousandth Man, alongside T-ara's Hyomin.[27]
In April 2014, it was announced that Woohyun would be starring in the KBS2 drama Hi! School-Love On alongside fellow Infinite member Lee Sung-yeol and child actress Kim Sae-Ron. The 20 episode drama aired once a week on Fridays at 20:55KST from July 11 to December 19, 2014.[28]
Voice Acting
Woohyun and other members of Infinite dubbed children's cartoon Wara Store from December 27, 2011 to March 27, 2012 as themselves.
Directing
December 2014 marked Nam Woohyun's directorial debut with the short horror film, 홍콩에서 생긴일 (What Happened in Hong Kong).[29]
FC Men
Woohyun currently plays as a striker for the South Korean celebrity football club, FC Men. Having previously played for FC One, he was recruited to FC Men in early 2015. [30] He made his football debut with FC Men on 17th May, 2015, in a charity match against Jeju United FC. [31]
