Manitoba Provincial Highway 1 is the Manitoba section of the Trans-Canada Highway. The total distance of the Trans Canada Highway in Manitoba is 519 km (322 miles).

Most of the highway is a 4-lane divided highway except at sections in Western & Eastern Manitoba, where the highway is two lanes. Construction does exist to twin those sections.

Also, Highway 1 only has expressway status at Southeastern Winnipeg & Portage La Prairie. Plans do exist to bring the whole Highway 1 (Except in Winnipeg, of course) into expressway status.

Route information

The highway was first given the "1" designation in 1942, and originally went between the Saskatchewan border and Winnipeg. The "1" designation to the Ontario border was not designated and was numbered "17". Later in 1945, Highway 17 was renumbered "1". When the Perimeter Highway was built in 1969, most of the traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway was rerouted onto the Perimeter Highway itself, thus avoiding traffic within Winnipeg. Later that year, the Perimeter Highway's Southern section was merged with the Trans-Canada Highway system.
