Nomadland is a 2020 American drama film directed by Chloé Zhao, who also wrote, edited, and co-produced. The film is based on the 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, and stars Frances McDormand as a woman who leaves her small town to travel around the American Midwest.

The film had its world premiere on September 11, 2020 at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion. It also won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it the first film ever to win the top prize at both Venice and Toronto.[3] It is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on December 4, 2020, by Searchlight Pictures. The film was acclaimed by critics, with major praise drawn towards Zhao's screenplay and direction, as well as McDormand's performance.

Premise

Nomadland follows Fern (Frances McDormand), a woman in her sixties who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.[4]

Cast

  • Frances McDormand as Fern
  • David Strathairn as David
  • Linda May as Linda, one of Fern's three mentors
  • Charlene Swankie as Swankie, one of Fern's three mentors
  • Bob Wells as Bob, one of Fern's three mentors

Production

Frances McDormand and director Chloé Zhao met a day before the 33rd Independent Spirit Awards in March 2018, and instantly wanted to do a film together. Filming for Nomadland took place over four months in fall 2018, with writer-director Zhao splitting time between set and pre-production for Eternals (2021). McDormand, Zhao, and other crew members lived out of vans over the course of production.[5] David Strathairn, and real-life nomads Linda May, Charlene Swankie, and Bob Wells, also star. McDormand, Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey, and Zhao produced the film.[6]

Release

Nomadland had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 11, 2020, and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on the same day.[7] At Venice, the film won several awards, including the festival's top honor, the Golden Lion.[8][9] At Toronto, the film won the People's Choice Award.[10] It was the first film ever to win the top prize at both Venice and Toronto.[3]

The film has screened or is scheduled to be screened at numerous international film festivals, including: Chicago,[11] Ghent,[12] Hamburg,[13] Hamptons,[14] Helsinki,[15] London,[16] Lumière,[17] Middleburg,[18] Mill Valley,[19] Montclair,[20] New York,[21] Reykjavik,[22] San Diego,[23] San Sebastian,[24] Telluride,[25] Zurich,[26] Taipei[27] and Saint Petersburg.[28]

In February 2019 Searchlight Pictures acquired the distribution rights.[29] The film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on December 4, 2020.[30]

Reception

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 97% based on 119 reviews, with an average rating of 8.93/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "A poetic character study on the forgotten and downtrodden, Nomadland beautifully captures the restlessness left in the wake of the Great Recession."[31] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 97 out of 100, based on 24 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[32]

Writing for The Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney called the film a "powerful character study" and said: "Like Zhao's earlier work, Nomadland is an unassuming film, its aptly meandering, unhurried non-narrative layering impressions rather than building a story with the standard markers. But the cumulative effect of its many quiet, seemingly inconsequential encounters and moments of solitary contemplation is a unique portrait of outsider existence."[33] Eric Kohn of IndieWire gave the film an "A–" and said that "director Chloé Zhao works magic with McDormand's face and the real world around it, delivering a profound rumination on the impulse to leave society in the dust."[34]
