The discography of English-Irish boy band One Direction, formed in London in 2010, consists of two studio albums, an extended play, nine singles—including two charity singles, a video album and nine music videos. They signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after being formed and finishing third in the seventh series of British television singing competition The X Factor in 2010.[1] They subsequently signed in North America with Columbia Records.[2] As of August 2012, One Direction have sold over three million albums, one million DVDs and eight million singles worldwide—including 1.17 million singles in the United Kingdom.[3]
The group's debut studio album Up All Night was released in November 2011. It topped the charts in sixteen countries and marked the first time a debut album by a British group had bowed atop the US Billboard 200 chart.[4][5] They were inducted into the Guinness World Records as a result.[6] The lead single, "What Makes You Beautiful", was an international hit, reaching number one in the UK and number four in the US; it has since been certified four and six times platinum in the US and Australia, respectively. Subsequent singles, "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing", became top ten hits in the UK. The band's second studio album Take Me Home was released in November 2012.[7] The record sold 540,000 copies in its first week in the US and went to number-one in thirty-five countries.[8][9] The album's lead single, "Live While We're Young", became One Direction's highest peaking song in a number of countries and recorded the highest one-week opening sales figure for a song by a non-US artist.[10] "Little Things" and "Kiss You", the succeeding singles, were moderate successes.
