Poonam Pandey is an Indian model and film actress, known for her works in Bollywood and Telugu cinema.[1] She began her career as a model.[2] She became one of the top nine contestants of the Gladrags Manhunt and Megamodel Contest in 2010 and appeared on the cover page of the fashion magazine.[3][4] She shot for 29 calendars for the year 2011, including the Gladrags Calendar. She was featured in Kingfisher Calendar 2012.[5]

Media spotlight

She rose to media spotlight when she promised to strip for the Indian cricket team if it won the 2011 Cricket World Cup.[6][7] India indeed lifted the World Cup; however, Poonam did not fulfill her promise due to public disapproval, but later claimed as she was denied permission by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).[8] In 2012, she posed naked after Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL 5.[9] Pandey has received a lot of coverage over explicit pictures of herself that she has posted on her Twitter account.[10] She was reported to have danced onstage at a New Year's Eve bash in Hyderabad in 2014.[11]

Film career

In 2013, she was the female lead of the film Nasha, playing a teacher who ends up having a sexual relationship with one of her students. While Rediff stated that she excelled as a seductress in the role,[12] the Mumbai Mirror stated she did "not play seductresses but a proper, responsible drama teacher" and that "Pandey makes an effort but isn't quite there".[13]

The posters for the film, which featured her "clad in nothing, but two placards tactfully placed to cover her body", angered people and a group of protestors tore the posters and set them on fire on 20 July 2013 in Mumbai.[14] The general secretary of Shiv Sena Chitrapat has objected to Pandey's skin showing in the advertisements, saying, "We find the poster highly vulgar and derogatory and won't allow such hoardings."[15] She signed on to star in the planned sequel to Nasha as Anita.[16]

In March 2014, she signed on for a film to be directed by Sameer Sharma.[17]
