- 1942 – World War II: HMAS Perth sunk during the Battle of Sunda Strait
- 1972 – Vietnam War: Last Royal Australian Air Force flight leaves Vietnam.
- 1985 – 1st/15th Royal New South Wales Lancers granted freedom of entry to Sydney, New South Wales.
- 1885 – New South Wales contingent to the Sudan sailed from Sydney. The force was first time Australian troops had served overseas in a purely Australian unit.
- 1942 – World War II: Broome and Wyndham bombed by Japanese aircraft.
- 1942 – World War II: HMAS Yarra sunk south of Java.
- 1948 – The Government approved the re-raising of the CMF to begin 1 July 1948.
- 1941 – World War II: Advance party of the 6th Division arrived in Greece.
- 1945 – World War II: Australians capture Saposa, Solomon Islands, from a Japanese invasion force.
- 1940 – World War II: the Australian Government announces the creation of the 7th Division as part of the 2nd AIF.
- 1975 – the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment relieved the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in the cleanup operation at Darwin after Cyclone Tracy.
- 1942 – World War II: Japanese forces occupy Java and land at Lae and Salamaua, New Guinea.
- 1967 – Vietnam War: Peter John Badcoe awarded VC for actions in South Vietnam.
- 1915 – World War II: 1st Division Order No 81 was issued at Mena, Egypt establishing the unique system of Unit Colour Patches.
- 1968 – Vietnam War: the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment begin Operation Pinnaroo in the Long Hai Hills, South Vietnam.
- 1942 – World War II: First troops from the Middle East began to arrive back in Australia.
- 1942 – World War II: The Citizens Militia Force and Volunteer Defence Corps were mobilised for the defence of Australia.
- 1900 – Second Boer War: The 3rd Victorian Bushmen Contingent sails for South Africa.
- 1949 – The Australian Regiment was given approval by the late King George VI to use the prefix "Royal", henceforth becoming known as the "Royal Australian Regiment".
- 1942 – World War II: General Thomas Blamey Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Military Force.
- 1951 – The Pacific Islands Regiment was formed in New Guinea as an integral part of the Australian Army.
- 1900 – Second Boer War: Members of the New South Wales Mounted Rifles reached Bloemfontein.
- 1951 – Korean War: C Coy 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment captured Hill 703.
- 1901 – General Order 10 is issued and notified the disbandment of the various colonial military forces that made up the newly formed Australian Army.
- 1989 – the 49th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment is granted freedom of entry to Brisbane.
- 1942 – World War II: Horn Island was bombed by Japanese aircraft.
- 1951 – Korean War: the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment captured Hill 410 during the United Nations' northern advance.
- 1916 – World War I: Bombardier Klintworth becomes the first Australian to be killed in France.
- 1942 – World War II: Japanese Imperial Headquarters debated whether to invade Australia, or not. It was decided to capture Port Moresby and the Solomons and then to isolate Australia by seizing Fiji, Samoa and New Caledonia.
- 1916 – World War II: Harry Chauvel was appointed to command the newly formed Anzac Mounted Division.
- 1943 – World War II: William Ellis Newton posthumously awarded the VC for his actions over the Salamaua Isthmus, New Guinea.
- 1917 – World War I: during the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, the town of Bapaume fell to the 2nd Division.
- 1951 – the National Service Act is approved; up to 227,000 men were trained until 1959.
- 1941 – World War II: the 16th Brigade arrived in Greece.
- 1971 – the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment is granted freedom of entry to Townsville, Queensland.
- 1916 – World War II: The first members of the 2nd Division arrive at Marseilles, France, as part of the transfer of the Australian Imperial Force from Egypt.
- 1932 – the New South Wales Lancers provided the mounted escort for the Governor General at the ceremony marking the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
- 1917 – World War: Frank Hubert McNamara was awarded a VC for rescuing a downed comrade in Palestine becoming the first Australian airman to win the award.
- 1954 – Korean War: 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment embarked in Sydney on the New Australia for its second tour in Korea.
- 1918 – World War I: Operation Michael, the German offensive on the Western Front, begins.
- 1953 – Korean War: the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment paraded together at Camp Casey, near Tongchuchon, for the first time since the regiment had been granted the 'Royal' prefix.
- 1942 – World War II: Nine Japanese aircraft conducted an air raid at Katherine killing one soldier.
- 1945 – World War II: Reginald Roy Rattey was awarded the VC for actions at Bougainville.
- 1891 - Shearers' Strike: Queensland troops arrested the strike leaders in the union camps at Clermont and Barcaldine.
- 1942 - World War II: Japanese aircraft attacked Wyndham, Western Australia.
- 1901 – Second Boer War: New South Wales Imperial Bushmen captured Koos De La Rey's convoy, including nine artillery pieces at Veldfontein, South Africa.
- 1942 – World War II: Japanese aircraft bomb Port Moresby.
- 1902 – Second Boer War: The 3rd Australian Commonwealth Horse sailed for service in South Africa.
- 1945 – World War II: Albert Chowne is awarded the VC posthumously for his actions at Dagua, New Guinea.
- 1917 – World War I: Percy Cherry awarded the VC posthumously for his actions at Lagincourt, France.
- 1942 – World War III: General Thomas Blamey appointed Commander-in-Chief, Australian Military Forces.
- 1944 – World War II: the Australian Government launches first Victory Loan aimed at raising £150 million for the war effort.
- 1953 – Korean War: the last engagement between RAAF Meteors and enemy MiGs for the war.
- 1918 – World War I: Stanley Robert McDougall is awarded a VC for action at Dernancourt, France.
- 1941 – World War II: The 9th Division relieved the 6th Division in North Africa, after which the 6th Division was sent to Greece.
- 1942 – World War II: The northern part of the Northern Territory was put under military control.
- 1885 – New South Wales Contingent to the Sudan campaign arrived at Suakin on the Red Sea.
- 1918 – World War I: The 3rd Division repulses a series of heavy German attacks, the attacks were repulsed along both banks of the Somme River, France.
- 1945 – World War II: the 25th Infantry Battalion took part in the Battle of the Puriata River on Bougainville and suffered heavy casualties.
- 1979 – the Special Air Service Regiment is granted freedom of entry to the City of Perth, Western Australia.
- 1921 – The Royal Australian Air Force was formed from the Army's Australian Flying Corps.
- 1949 – The prefix "Royal" granted to the Australian Regiment, henceforth to be known as the "Royal Australian Regiment".
