[edit]- 1828 – Pennsylvania's first state-owned railway, the Philadelphia and Columbia Railway, is authorized by the state legislature.[1]
- 1849 – The Pittsburg and Steubenville Railroad, which eventually became the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway after a foreclosure sale, is chartered in Pennsylvania.[2]
- 1859 – The City Council of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, approves the construction of the Chestnut and Walnut Street Railway.[3]
- 1870 – Pennsylvania Railroad signs a 999-year lease of the Erie and Pittsburgh Railroad.[4]
- 1875 – The Mayor of Los Angeles, California, approves a measure to allow the Spring and Sixth Street Railroad, a predecessor of the Pacific Electric Railway, to extend its line to connect to the Southern Pacific Railroad train station.[5]
- 1897 – Construction begins on the Sierra Railway of California, now known as the Sierra Railroad, between Oakdale and Jamestown, California.[6]
- 1900 – Mayor of New York Robert A. Van Wyck turns the first shovel of dirt in groundbreaking ceremonies for the first subway line in the city.[1]

[edit]- 1925 – The Gyokunan Electric Railway in Japan opens.
- 1935 – Pennsylvania Station in Newark, New Jersey opens.
- 1932 – The first radio broadcast from a moving train occurs when New York City station WABC broadcasts from a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad train operating in Maryland.[1]
- 1956 – Kansas City Southern Railway officially dedicates Deramus Yards in Shreveport, Louisiana, named in honor of William N. Deramus, Jr., the company's current president.[7]
- 1967 – Soo Line Railroad discontinues passenger train operations.[1]
- 1967 – Osaka Municipal Subway's Tanimachi Line opens.
- 1970 – The last California Zephyr operated by Western Pacific Railroad arrives in Oakland, California.
