Recent deaths
Whats the relationship between this section and the articles Deaths in 2006 etc??AndrewRT - Talk 12:34, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Israel's nuclear program
- Note that Fâtimâh bint Fulâni (talk · contribs · block log) was found out to be a banned sock puppet of kirbytime. --Matt57 (talk•contribs) 02:26, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Does anyone disagree?--Fâtimâh bint Fulâni 15:48, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- I expect most people do. If you wanted to provide some evidence, however, that is specific to Israel and not to every other country with a nuclear program, that would be helpful. IronDuke 16:02, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Mordechai Vanunu.--Fâtimâh bint Fulâni 01:30, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Vanunu may be a current event now that he is being sentenced again, but he is only tangential to the article Nuclear weapons and Israel, so there is no reason to make that a current event as well. Joshdboz 11:43, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
In any case, Israel's nuclear program, along with North Korea's is ongoing. It is a current event. So is the United States' nuclear program. But NOT the Soviet Union's nuclear program. If not for being a current event, what is the criteria for inclusion in the current events sidebar?--Fâtimâh bint Fulâni 21:36, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Something like Israel giving up it's nuclear weapons program could be tagged, except only that section would warrant a tag, not the whole article, and not for very long. IronDuke 21:47, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Any policy/guidelines which explain this? I'm going by the common sense right now.--Fâtimâh bint Fulâni 22:13, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- If you click on the current events link in the tag, you get this [1]. As you see, those current events refer to acute events, as it were, not chronic, ongoing issues. IronDuke 22:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, this is getting ridiculous. This would be like putting a current events tag on United States just because it still exists and is changing. Joshdboz 01:43, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Note that Fâtimâh bint Fulâni (talk · contribs · block log) was found out to be a banned sock puppet of kirbytime. --Matt57 (talk•contribs) 02:26, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Elections
I don't know if I was too early (although nothing seems to be said that) but I've added the October elections for Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario. I've put since the early-August ones seems to be still there.--JForget 19:37, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- I'd suggest only putting one month of elections at a time and is there are too many, split them in two. Therequiembellishere (talk) 10:21, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Ongoing conflicts
Before reverting the bold conflicts, please discuss. Bolding them was a WP:BOLD move by me in light of a new separation in the List of ongoing conflicts page. Those conflicts should be more visible.--TheFEARgod (Ч) 21:31, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- nothing is bolded in sidebar besides headings. no need for bolding. Also refer to talk page in your summary if you wish anyone to see this discussion. --87.198.133.62 (talk) 20:38, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- I gave an argument for bolding, you didn't for non bolding.--TheFEARgod (Ч) 08:58, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure discriminating that way (if at all) between conflicts is useful here. Really "minor" ones probably don't belong on the sidebar @ all... 76.117.247.55 (talk) 23:03, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- Just to add, Pakistan is located in South Asia, not the Middle East. So that's why it's conflicts have been changed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.119.97.132 (talk) 18:08, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Trials - do we need an indictment first?
Rod Blogovich is will be "tried" in the Illinois Senate and could be removed from office. However, he has not yet been indicted, so there is no planned trial. Do we base who has an trial based on an arrest or should it be an indictement? user:mnw2000
- It would probably be best (to prevent trouble) if we required an indictment first, but given the spotty coverage of such things for trials in more remote places in the world, that might be a hard standard to keep. As to Blagogevich, he's been officially impeached (indicted), so we can leave him. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 23:02, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- The impeachment process in the US is not a legal proceeding but a political one, so no indictments are involved. The trial in a political body like the Illinois Senate consists of the senators voting on whether the accusations, i.e., the impeachment, made by the lower body, often the Assembly, should be upheld. If so, the accused is removed from office. President Clinton was impeached, i.e., accused by the House, but not removed from office because the vote in the Senate did not uphold the accusations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.138.70.132 (talk) 20:40, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
EUR
Is having Slovakia's adoption of EUR really appropriate here? It just links to "Euro" and there's no information there about SK's adoption of it. 76.117.247.55 (talk) 23:02, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Cultural/Social
I added this section but someone just keeps on removing it. So, what now? Where wold you put news about the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup, and Academy Awards?--23prootie (talk) 02:31, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- I agree that this heading should exist, but only for events that are of major widespread importance at an international level. Therefor, I would agree the Olympics should be there, but question whether the Academy Awards should be as it is not really an 'on-going' event to the same degree. The preparation for the Olympics has been underway, and I'm sure news items exist.
- This is also a good spot for coverage of events that are of a religious nature (example the Pope John Paul's youth event which had historic numbers showing up, and which had a great deal of news before he arrived, while the event took place, and items about the aftermath), for forums/summits such as the World Social Summit in Brazil January 2009), etc.
- I will try to re-instate it in the near future, with some currently relevant links. If anyone else feels so inclined to do it before then, feel free. Kavri (talk) 14:54, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Undid removal of Health/Medical section of Ongoing Events
I added the section, as there is a worldwide pandemic of H1N1 flu, with WHO alert level at 6, the highest. Articles about the flu, vaccinations, and the upcoming Fall 2009 flu season (which is expected to be worse than the original Spring/Summer 2009 arrival)are in local and national news, in a number of countries, on a weekly/monthly basis.
The H1N5 is of continued concern. It has a mortality rate of 50-60 percent (by comparison, the Spanish flu was under 3%). While the transmission is from animal to person, and the incidence of person to person is rare/unknown, the flu is still of great concern for several reasons.
One, animals other than birds have contracted the flu and not died (birds that contract the flu usually die). This provides a host for the virus to re-combine. The largest group of animals to carry the disease are cats both wild and domestic. Some zoos have had to kill their wild cat populations. Civets in Germany were found to carry the virus.
Two, there is concern of antigentic shift. The H1N1 virus is a worldwied epidmic. It is an unstable virus, and has genetic material from bird, swine, and humans beings. That it is concurrent with the H1N5 virus means there is an increased chance of the two virus recombining, to unknown, but possibly very lethal and infectious extent.
The removal was by an unsigned IP address. As I am not on regularly, it would be appreciated if others could help in restoring it if it is moved again.Kavri (talk) 14:36, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Conflicts: Africa/Middle East
Any reason these two are grouped together? I'd say they could well be individual lists, but perhaps there has been past discussion on that, on which case I'd appreciate any links. Thanks, Waldir talk 16:20, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- Well, since noone opposed, I performed the change. Please comment here if you disagree. CHeers, Waldir talk 15:39, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Agree. Africa and the Middle East are rather large parts of the world on their own without being grouped together. --candle•wicke 01:15, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, there's a major reason, Egypt in Africa is also part of the Middle East and is a major player there politically. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.138.70.132 (talk) 20:47, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Basque conflict
I decided to add the Basque conflict again to the sidebar as it is not a dormant conflict. ETA has declared a ceasefire, but it still steals stuff, people are arrested and tortured, beaten up, etc. The conflict isnt over, depiste being at its lowest level. Also, as the Real IRA is listed I think the National Liberation Front of Corsica should be added too as it is much more active than the RIRA or ETA. Pencil (talk) 15:39, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Mississippi River flooding
Does anyone else think that the 2011 Mississippi River floods should be added to the Disaster section? -happy5214 09:10, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
2011 China flooding
Anyone else think that * Flooding in China ought to be added to this sidebar? EdwardLane (talk) 08:42, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Operation Enduring Freedom
Are these supposed to be over or what? –HTD 12:19, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Information in 'Trial' section is (very) outdated
In terms of Recently concluded, Ongoing, Upcoming. I have removed some. But I think there are many more. Please help. Thanks, New worl (talk) 03:10, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
- I moved the talk to Portal_talk:Current_events#Information_in_.27Trial.27_section_is_.28very.29_outdated as suggested. New worl (talk) 03:13, 4 June 2013 (UTC)
Recent deaths
Please note the following longstanding suggestion in the Sidebar code:
<!-- Suggested rule of thumb: Whole current month until archivation, otherwise limit to 25–30 entries, or span a scope of 14 days, whichever is longer -->
I mention this as the list of "Recent deaths" has been excessively long for quite some time. Is it time to ask editors to exercise greater discretion on who to include on this high visibility form? Farolif (talk) 17:44, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- Who decides whether something is excessively long especially as we risk leaving out high profile people from other cultures ie Hanif Mohammad, a member of the ICC Hall of Fame. Capitalistroadster (talk) 01:33, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Assessing the person's impact beyond their culture can be one method to consider. A person whose circumstances of death has generated substantial media attention is also a possibility.
- The challenge should be to select a list of 25-30 notable entries which actually extends (at least occasionally) beyond the two-week fallback range. If the standards are set low enough for qualifying a name to be included, then it's otherwise quite easy/lazy to find more than that many Wikipedia deaths in the previous 14 days. Farolif (talk) 02:18, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- I have started putting nominees in the talk page for the current affairs entry for that date. My criteria now include media coverage, whether the talk page for the individual indicates that a Wikiproject considers them to be of high or mid importance or whether they have achieved a significant distinction (ie significant prize or post, member of Hall of Fame etc). Capitalistroadster (talk) 04:43, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Depending on the Wikiproject, it should still mostly be limited to high-importance (if at all). Farolif (talk) 13:19, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
RfC about Mobile-friendly sidebar removing hard-coded widths
In an effort to move the Current Events portal to a mobile-friendly layout, I have drafted a version of the current sidebar that will fill the width of the column that it is displayed in. The current hard-coded width of 250px is limiting in any layout that does not follow the exact desktop layout. My changes will make no visible changes to the current desktop view of the parent Current Events page, but will set the the stage for the sidebar to slot well in a mobile-friendly view. Please review the link below and see how it fits within my proposed Current Events page.
- Draft Current Events sidebar
- Draft Current Events page with draft sidebar - View this on a mobile platform for comparison.
(Please note, this RfC is only for the minor layout change of the sidebar, not for the overall Current Events re-layout I have proposed on that talk page. Once/if this change is approved I will begin an RfC over there.) Thank you for your time. — RossO (talk) 17:29, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
Moving forward with Mobile-friendly Current Events project
Today I have applied a new set of widths to the sidebar content, as per my RfC above. The final version of the change was to remove width="250"
attributes and replace them with width: 100%; width: calc(100% - 15px);
inline style values. The first width will be read by all CSS-cabable browsers. The second width will be read by calc
-cabable browsers (most browsers since 2013). The calc is only a temporary measure to deal with the gutter in the layout of the current page. Once the flexbox layout is in place, this calc'd width can be removed.
I hope that @Capitalistroadster: will chime in here with comments about these changes. — 17:09, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
Korean Conlict
Shouldn't the Korean Conlict be added under ongoing conflicts even though there is no actual fighting? (Just like e.g. the Abkhaz-Georgian Conlict) Janomoogo (talk) 10:20, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Ongoing Events Sidebar Needs Attention
I've noticed that many of the articles here stagnate for a long time. I don't understand why some, such as the 1MDB scandal, are mainstays when there is either very little new information worthy of the ongoing events page. As well as the hurricane/typhoon seasons, which have been here for as long as I can remember. I'm not sure but I would guess this list isn't aimed at those who read up extensively on similar matters, so I think a shorter(?) list would be better for those trying to get a 'wrap up' of ongoing events. beatenplastic 00:13, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
