Predix is General Electric's software platform for the collection and analysis of data from industrial machines.[1] General Electric plans to support the growing industrial internet of things with cloud servers and an app store.[2] GE is a member of the Industrial Internet Consortium which works to aid the development and use of industrial internet technologies.[3]
Predix as a cloud-based PaaS (platform as a service) is claimed to enable industrial-scale analytics for asset performance management (APM) and operations optimization by providing a standard way to connect machines, data, and people. GE expects Predix software to do for factories and plants what Apple's iOS did for cell phones.[4] The software was introduced to the market and made available to all companies in 2015.[5] Built on Cloud Foundry open source technology, Predix provides a microservices based delivery model with a distributed architecture (cloud, and on-machine).[6]
Overview
Predix aims towards system wide optimization and to create a detailed model that spans entire systems such as aircraft operations. The model allows better optimization of each part of the system (such as a turbine blade) as well as optimization of the entire system (such as airline operations).[7]
Predix is developed by GE Digital in San Ramon, California near Silicon Valley and originally its own business unit. In September 2015 it became re-integrated into General Electric's IT division.[8][9]
In November 2016, Forrester Research published The Forrester Wave™: IoT Software Platforms, Q4 2016 and recognized GE's Predix as a leader in the evaluation.[10] Quote: “GE has been using its Predix platform to support its own native offerings before making it available to others to build upon…Numerous customer references cited GE’s intense focus and history in the industrial market as a key differentiator over its competition.” [11]
Collaborations
- July 2016: Microsoft and General Electric said they will make GE's Predix platform for the Internet of Things (IoT) available for industrial businesses on Microsoft's Azure cloud service.[12] The move "marks the first step in a broad strategic collaboration between the two companies, which will allow customers around the world to capture intelligence from their industrial assets and take advantage of Microsoft's enterprise cloud applications".[13]
- November 2016 : GE Power has reached an enterprise-wide software agreement with US energy utility Exelon to deploy its Predix software operating system. GE will be integrating its entire suite of Predix across Exxon's fleet of nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and natural gas facilities.[14]
- November 2016 : GE Digital, SAP AG enters IoT-focused collaboration. Building on the respective strengths of GE Digital and SAP, the companies plan to focus their initial efforts on opportunities to strengthen the integration between GE's Predix operating system and SAP HANA Cloud Platform.[15]
- November 2016 : GE announced a collaboration with Power Costs Inc. to connect plant asset and operational generation data. Energy applications that address everything from machine reliability and uptime to fleet-wide operations are sold and delivered on GE's Predix platform.[16]
- November 2016 : Reliance Industries Limited and GE announced the signing of a global partnership agreement in the Industrial IoT space to work together and build out joint applications on GE's Predix platform.[17]
