Psycho is an upcoming Indian Tamil language psychological thriller film directed by Mysskin. The film's music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja and the cinematography was handled by P. C. Sreeram, collaborating for the first time with Mysskin.[1][2][3] The film was produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also stars in the lead role. The film will also feature Nithya Menen, Aditi Rao Hydari, Ram and Shaji Chen. The project was launched in September 2018.

Production[edit]

In July 2015, director Mysskin signed a deal with film financier Raghunandan to make a film starring the financier's son, Shyam, who was keen to become an actor in the Tamil film industry. Mysskin decided to give Shyam the stage name of Maitreya and requested the father-son duo to wait for three months until the production of Savarakathi (2018) was over. Maitreya performed a test shoot for the film and the producers began recruiting members of the cast and crew.[4] Mysskin then requested to delay the film even further in March 2016, so he could complete a film titled Thupparivaalan (2017) for Vishal. Despite Raghunandan's reluctance, Mysskin made an unconditional promise to start on the project soon after he was done with his other commitments.[4] In the meantime, Maitreya prepared for his role in the film throughout 2016 and opted against signing any other project to keep focused on his debut film.[5] Actress Tanya Ravichandran was signed on for her supposed first film role, but the film continued to be delayed. In July 2017, Maitreya stated that he was hopeful that the film would begin production by September 2017 after the release of Thupparivaalan. After the release of the film, Mysskin became busy with acting commitments and refused to start the film for Raghunandan.[6][4]

During March 2018, Mysskin announced that he would make a film starring Shanthanu Bhagyaraj in the lead role. A mutual friend of Mysskin and Shanthanu, film producer Ravinder Chandrasekaran of Libra Productions, had first initiated the idea of casting the actor, and Mysskin and cinematographer P. C. Sreeram accepted his choice. Shanthanu expressed his delight at being cast, calling it a "new birth" for him as an actor and that it was "a sweet surprise" as he had been "struggling for a decade to get an identity". For his character in the film, he began growing a thick beard.[7][8][9] The producers held discussions with Nithya Menen and Sai Pallavi to portray the lead actresses, while A. R. Rahman was being considered as the leading choice to compose the film's music.[10][11]

However, in a turn of events, Mysskin decided to cast Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead role instead of Shanthanu, after Libra Productions left the project in July 2018.[12][13] Under the banner of Arun Mozhi Manickam's Double Meaning Productions, Mysskin finalised a cast of Aditi Rao Hydari, Nithya Menen and Ram, while Ilaiyaraaja was signed as music composer.[14][15][16] The shoot of the film began in early September 2018, with a first look promotional poster released later that month revealing the title of the project to be Psycho.[17] A second schedule of the film was completed in early December 2018 after being shot in hill-towns across Tamil Nadu.[18]

In October 2018, Maitreya called out Mysskin for cheating him and his father, by beginning the project with another team, and threatened to take the matter to court.[19] In mid-December, he secured an interim injunction against Mysskin from directing or releasing any film with a storyline that was similar to the one that the pair had discussed.[20][21] Editor Anthony accepted his proposal to join this project.
