The Richmond Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Richmond, California. In all, the department is responsible for an area of 56.1 square miles (145 km2).[1]

Richmond Sanitary Service landfill fire

In September 2002 the city coordinated an eight alarm fire call.[2] The Richmond Sanitary Service landfill had lit on fire.[2] After putting the fire out steam continued to spew forcing crews to remain on site for hours to water the still heated area in order to prevent reignition.[2]
