SCORE Class 5

SCORE[1] Class 5 is open wheel unlimited Baja Bug class that competes in the SCORE off-road race series races including the Baja 1000, Baja 500, San Felipe 250, Baja Sur 500 and the SCORE Desert Challenge.

This class is open and all components will be considered open unless restricted by SCORE International. Vehicles must have the external appearance of a "Baja Bug".[2]

Vehicle description

Vehicle must be a Volkswagen Sedan Type 1 Hardtop or Convertible.[3] 181 Safari,[4] Porsche 900 series,[5] and Karmann Ghia are included in this class. Seeley Racing[6] runs a Class 5 car that uses a highly modified New Beetle body shell.[7]

Class requirements

Engine

Any manufacturer air-cooled, 4-cylinder, single-cam, pushrod,[8] Volkswagen concept engine is allowed. Volkswagen four-cylinder water-cooled engines[9] may also be used. Displacement is open.

Suspension

Front and rear suspension systems may be modified or replaced as long as stock concept is retained and wheelbase limit is not exceeded.

Body

Vehicles must have an external appearance of a Baja Bug.[10] Wheelbase may be increased but not exceed 105" front to rear centreline. No center steering wheel is allowed. One or two seats may be used, position is optional within confines of the main cage but no center seating is allowed. Sheet metal front and rear firewalls are required and attached to the roll cage.

Doors must remain in original stock location and maintain stock shape and size. Doors may be welded or fastened closed. Windshield and window glass is optional but must be shatterproof if retained.
