Shaftesbury School is a coeducational secondary day and boarding school located in Shaftesbury in the English county of Dorset.[1]
Previously a voluntary controlled Church of England school administered by the Diocese of Salisbury and Dorset County Council,[2] The school converted to academy status under the Diocese of Salisbury in June 2014. The origins of the school date back to 1718, and the school has offered boarding since 1898. It is one of only 38 state boarding schools in England.[3]
The schools boasts around 1,300 students who each belong to 1 of 4 houses. Sir Steve Redgrave, Daley Thompson, Tessa Sanderson and Jesse Owens provide the school with their 4 houses, Redgrave (Green), Thompson (Red), Sanderson (Blue) and Owens (Yellow). The school has expanded over the last few years providing students with new facilities such as a specialised P.E block, equipped with a dance studio, gym and 2 classrooms with the latest Apple equipment and a new sixth form block, along with many upgrades to the 8 computer rooms. The boarding house underwent a £3 million refurbishment and expansion in 2012 and now provides a home to over 100 students from around the world.
Shaftesbury School offers GCSEs, BTECs and NVQs as programmes of study for pupils, with some courses offered in conjunction with the North Dorset campus of Yeovil College. Shaftesbury Schools sixth form provision is offered in conjunction with Sturminster Newton High School in Sturminster Newton, and students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A Levels and further BTECs.[4]
