Silence (Japanese: 沈黙, translit. Chinmoku) is a 1971 Japanese drama film directed by Masahiro Shinoda, based on the novel of the same name by Shūsaku Endō. The premise involves the entry of Jesuit missionaries to seventeenth-century Japan. Most of the film's dialogue is in Japanese, though it has short sequences in English. It was entered into the 1972 Cannes Film Festival.[1]
