linked names?[edit]

So many names in red. I was led to understand that the only names that should be linked are those that are likely to ever have their own article. If not they should be delinked so as to reduce the amount of red names. If they are very likely to have an article someday then certainly make them linked so as to draw attention to an editor to create that biography. I think I'm right on this. Those men linked are 90% Davis Cup players (I check every name on the daviscup.com website), so they are notable by our standards. As for the remaining names (women, and the rest 10%) they are all double checked by Googling, so if I found another source other than what is shown as reference here then I linked them (as per significant coverage - and in case of tournament winners : as per tennis guidelines). There are some unlinked names already, they are the ones that can not be identified without a doubt and there are a couple of them. Note that many of the linked players were the sole representatives of their country (I'm speaking countries apart from the US, Germany and France) and they are mostly of aristocratic heritage (and as a characteristic of their era they were the elite of their society, politicians, doctors, inventors, and competitors for multiple other sports, so they are notable for OTHER reasons as well). Some examples : I've created Georges Glasser recently, he was a developper of Jet Propulsion engines, Béla von Kehrling a while ago, he was a football, ice hockey and table tennis player (upon my research many others played table tennis and tennis simultaneously). I will create Imre Zichy soon, who was a count and invented the Reversing Alarm System for cars, Michael Sumarokov-Elston is also significant by his biography (check the link next his name). And these are just a few names, not even the famous ones. So believe me when I say I checked all names and they are notable and I can't tell if the articles for all of them will ever be created but as per wikipedia guidelines they would deserve a place here. Cool. Yep if they are Davis Cup/Fed Cup/Wrightman Cup players they should all be in red. Thanks, and great job. Fyunck(click) (talk) 09:26, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for reminding me the Wightman Cup. I didn't know it makes participating players notable :S I came across its name numerous times when I did my name checks. Sadly I didn't remember who and when. Anyway I will add the cup to the August section. Lajbi Holla @ meCP 09:46, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's not written in the guidelines (not everything is), but it's what is meant by "The player has competed in the Fed Cup, Davis Cup, Hopman Cup or similar international competition." I would treat the Wightman Cup as a similar competition. Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:20, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Vincent Richards beat Karel Koželuh for the Pro world champion title.[edit]

This is the body of this Wikipedia article. The reference to it is written in Hungarian which I can't make out.

I wasn't aware there was a World Pro Championship of tennis in 1930 or 1931. Can someone please elaborate on this, as to what the tournament was where Richards beat Koželuh for the 'Pro world champion title' ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tmartin prof (talkcontribs) 00:46, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I finally I got to the bottom of this matter and fixed some parts of the article to make it more comprehensive. Also there's a ref dedicated to this, which is ref [1], though it is also in Hungarian. Lajbi Holla @ meCP 18:31, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
First of all there were Major professional tennis tournaments before the Open Era. Although there were several auxiliary minor tournaments the amateur "tour" was far more complex and dominant. Since these events weren't so consistent their dates and places depended upon the agreement of the players involved. Apart from that there was the Tilden Tennis Company also for pros, but it was more likely an exhibition series rather than a competitive tour. As for your question the "title" was contested in June whereas the champion and the challenger agreed on a best out of three series in the U.S. to decide the 1931 champion, which was Bill Tilden in the end. Also there is a list dedicated to this. It dates back to 1877: World-number-one male tennis-player rankings. Lajbi Holla @ meCP 11:37, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I found an English source as well. The caption of the picture at 22. page of the 8 April 1931 edition of the Capital Times states:"Bill Tilden, left, is challenger for the professional tennis title held by Vincent Richards, right". Furthermore this refers to him as "world professional tennis champion". Lajbi Holla @ meCP 11:43, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A very good English source to read about professional tennis and champions in 1931. Lajbi Holla @ meCP 23:42, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've often referred to that page. What we need is for you to translate that Hungarian pdf magazine into English, and publish it so we can all read it. ;-) I don't think there is any automated process to do that? Fyunck(click) (talk) 23:47, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly I don't think so. It's all scanned newspapers with all the possible footprints of time on it, press errors and alike so I doubt a word recognition program could convert it. Lajbi Holla @ meCP 00:03, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
