Legislative districts results
[edit]I don't know if anybody's interested, but CQ has a table of Alaska results by districts of the Alaska House of Representatives. I'm not sure how useful it is (I doubt the average person knows which district corresponds to which part of the state), but it could have some informational value. – Hysteria18 (Talk • Contributions) 21:32, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think it's a bad idea. It would actually be pretty interesting. Just make sure to put in who represents the district.--Jerzeykydd (talk) 02:07, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
No Palin Impact?
[edit]Surely it's a bit wrong to assume putting Palin on the ticket had no impact whatsoever, especially as there is evidence that McCain was behind in Alaska before he picked Palin. The fact that McCain was behind in Alaska then took a 20 point lead would certainly hint at a Palin effect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.145.37.117 (talk) 23:54, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Borough Colors
[edit]From what I see and understand, the map of Alaska's boroughs show that Obama won the majority of votes in some and McCain did in the others. That's not correct, McCain won all the boroughs.[1][2]. Am I reading the map correctly? If I am, in needs to be changed but I don't know how to do that. ─ Matthewi (Talk) • 12:28, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- Having done a lot of work with the Alaska election results provided by the Division of Elections, I can attest that this map and the one from 2012 can not possibly be accurate. Reporting of in precinct results is done on a precinct by precinct basis, and I have not yet found a precinct that straddles two boroughs or census areas, but absentee, question or challenged, and early voting are aggregated over the 40 house districts of Alaska's lower legislative chamber. It looks very much like the proffered map is the result of reporting just the individual precinct totals. Any attempt to allocate these votes among the larger census areas which encompass multiple census areas is bound to be guesswork, and they comprise something close 30% of all ballots cast. Since early voting and questioned ballots skew Democratic, some places with high amounts of early voting may be painted the wrong color. More to the point, Petersburg Borough's formation was a ballot issue in 2012, so if its results are listed in this map, it's an anachronism.--2601:B:8000:67E:949E:19BA:FAAE:C8EB (talk) 07:05, 26 May 2014 (UTC) John Foelster
- Unlike in many other states where state and federal elections are oftentimes conducted at the county level nonetheless, Alaska has a unified, state-run bureaucracy for these elections. It could very well be that the map creators simply didn't provide a borough-by-borough breakdown because the Alaska Division of Elections doesn't tabulate its results in that fashion. For example, here is the precinct-by-precinct breakdown for the communities of the Wade Hampton Census Area:
Community | McCain votes | Obama votes |
---|---|---|
Alakanuk | 57 | 79 |
Chevak | 53 | 121 |
Emmonak | 86 | 124 |
Hooper Bay | 87 | 127 |
Kotlik | 40 | 106 |
Marshall | 35 | 53 |
Mountain Village | 138 | 85 |
Nunam Iqua | 11 | 20 |
Pilot Station | 92 | 73 |
Pitkas Point | 16 | 8 |
Russian Mission | 33 | 60 |
St. Mary's | 51 | 101 |
Scammon Bay | 39 | 59 |
TOTAL | 738 | 1,016 |
This is a borough equivalent in which Obama outpolled McCain by a significant margin. RadioKAOS – Talk to me, Billy 01:04, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- I will however note that although we have no idea how the absentee, early and question voters in Wade Hampton voted, it is unlikely that they were (there are unlikely to have been any early ballots in Wade Hampton though), in aggregate, enough to overcome Obama's margin in this case and are actually more likely to have added to it.--2601:B:8000:67E:949E:19BA:FAAE:C8EB (talk) 07:05, 26 May 2014 (UTC) John Foelster
