Is this becoming a running news report?

[edit]

Being mindful of WP:NOTNEWS, that Wikipedia is not a news source, I'm noticing that nearly daily summaries are being posted to the article from an apparently ongoing series of protests, at a level of detail that has been reaching down to every random thing some observer or other heard being yelled during the protest. I've removed those because I don't think that's controversial, but it seems to me that if this is an ongoing situation, there should be less per-day detail, treating the article as a diary. The coverage should be at a higher level, albeit updated (again at a high level) to reflect the most significant new developments. Largoplazo (talk) 22:21, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

And worse than that, almost everything uses a single non-independent source: National Council of Resistance of Iran/People's Mujahedin of Iran. MarioGom (talk) 17:43, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2016–2021 Iranian Insurgency2016–2021 Iranian protests – This article is about protests, not an insurgency. Charles Essie (talk) 15:58, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Support. A quick review of the article shows many statements and wording supporting protests and little support for insurgency. Mburrell (talk) 19:45, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Revision needed - Agreed with Mburrell, but I think the title should be "2020–2021 Iranian protests". Most of the content discusses protests between 2020 to present and the article does not relate these protests to earlier ones. No separate article exists for the protests between 2020 to present. [edit]

@Toomuchcuriosity: I agree with you but I think a merger with 2019–2020 Iranian protests would be better. What do you think? Charles Essie (talk) 02:01, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I now think this article should be kept and turned into a proper umbrella article. Charles Essie (talk) 17:29, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't get here in time to vote and while I also would have opposed this move I am however strongly in favor of the creation of a new titled Iranian democracy movement with a much broader scoop. Charles Essie (talk) 22:06, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unreliable source

[edit]

This article extensively cites [1]. This is the website of the People's Mujahedin of Iran and a WP:SELFPUBLISHED source of a political group. Hence it doesn't seem like a reliable source. I will remove all instances of this source and replace them with citation tags, giving a reasonable time to find sources for this content.VR talk 04:55, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2016–2021 Iranian protests2017–2021 Iranian protests – The 2016 Cyrus the Great Revolt took place a full fourteen months before the 2017–2018 Iranian protests even began and neither article suggests a link between them. What is this article for?

[edit]

In the past, I suggested the creation of an umbrella article for the protests in Iran from 2017 to the present because they appeared to be more or less constant since then and the existing articles overlap with each other's timelines. I presume that's what this article was created for given its title but it only covers protests in 2020 and 2021. There also appears to be confusion over the article's scope as the infobox and opening paragraph use the title Iranian Democracy Movement which suggests a much longer timeline, potentially going back to Qajar Iran.

So I guess I'm wondering which is it? Personally, I've since come to believe that a broader article about Iran's democracy movement (such as the ones focused on the democracy movements in China, Kazakhstan, Nepal and Vietnam) might be more useful but as of now this article doesn't really work as either. It provides insufficient coverage of the protests and is not particularly well sourced. What should we do? Charles Essie (talk) 20:41, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the title of the article needs to be changed, it is much too confusing given that the first protests of this wider movement began in 2016 (Cyrus the Great Revolt) and they are currently ongoing in 2022. Changing it from “2017-2021 Iranian protests” to “Iranian Democracy Movement” might be useful in reducing confusion. I think this article needs to be dramatically expanded in scope to cover the development of a widespread anti-regime opposition movement in Iran since the mid-2010s, including a brief timeline and history of each stage (2017-2018 protests, Bloody November, Mahsa Amini protests, etc) and links to their respective pages. It might also be helpful to cover certain aspects of this anti-regime opposition (such as Masih Alinejad’s Anti-Mandatory Hijab activism and the Water crisis protests) separately in certain sections. 216.213.149.50 (talk) 16:14, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be okay with that. Charles Essie (talk) 16:43, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If someone with a registered Wikipedia account could change the name that would be extremely helpful. I’m currently working on expanding the scope of this article as well as improving the other articles relating to this movement in Iran. 216.213.149.50 (talk) 17:45, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I could do that but it won't work until the article's scope is sufficiently expanded. Charles Essie (talk) 19:25, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Merge

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
To merge or move content from 2017–2021 Iranian protests to the relevant 2-year pages, given that there no overview article has been written; overlap. Klbrain (talk) 09:47, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Since this is still not a proper umbrella article and only covers protests from 2020 and 2021, I think it's content should simply be merged into 2019–2020 Iranian protests and 2021–2022 Iranian protests respectively. It might be better to create an umbrella article from scratch anyway. Charles Essie (talk) 23:03, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Idreeshussain123: As you are the creator of this article I would really like to know what you think. Charles Essie (talk) 18:05, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would also like to point out that I would be willing to abandon this proposal should this page become a proper umbrella article. Charles Essie (talk) 20:49, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Content is a duplicte of 2019–2020 Iranian protests. Merge into that article please. Sgnpkd (talk) 11:37, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
