ABBA

[edit]

Which method will be used for a penalty shoot out?

Original sequence

  • AB AB AB AB AB (sudden death starts) AB AB etc.

Trial sequence (ABBA)

@Mobile mundo: The standard format will be used, no changes have been approved. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:36, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Uruguay v France

[edit]

Please fix the source for Tactical Line-up for this match. On the document pdf it's show "Quarter-final" and not "Quarter-finals". The same things will be done also for "Match report".--79.26.106.190 (talk) 13:30, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-finals trivia

[edit]

Facts that can be trivially checked do not need to be sourced. Everybody can go to FIFA World Cup and check that since 1966 in every single edition at least one semi-finalist was a previous winner of the multiple World Cups.--Ymblanter (talk) 09:35, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion for improvement of the WP Match summary sheet.

[edit]

For international specialists in the sport, the WP summary sheet of the match does indeed offer the most and the best information available for each match, everything you need to know about that specific match right there, all in the summary sheet. For example, one has the venue and attendance, all referees details, etc. Compared to other international web sites, the WP summary sheet is the best I have seen in all of the internet, even the FIFA official web site. There is however, only one piece of information currently missing from the WP match summary sheet format. The piece of information currently missing is the complete bench lineup available for each coarch at each specific game. The WP summary sheet gives all the substitutions that were made very accurately and helpfully, but it does not list the complete list of bench players available for the coach at each game. I would suggest this be added to the WP march summary sheet, including the players numbers and a special notation for a suspended or injured player for that match. A suggestion. Thank you, warshy (¥¥) 19:00, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is particularly necessary. Unless a player is suspended, every member of the squad may be included in the matchday squad, even if they're injured (although chances are they'd probably be left out), so the subs can be intuited by deducting the starting line-up from the full squad listed at 2018 FIFA World Cup squads. Listing all 12 subs would take up too much room, IMO. You do make a good point about one benefit of this being that the injured/suspended players would be easier to identify, but they can instead be listed in the prose summary of each game if the injury/suspension is particularly noteworthy. The important substitutes in a World Cup match are the ones who actually come on. – PeeJay 23:36, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank for replying. Let me add a rejoinder. Even America football TV broadcasts now list the full roster available for the coach for that particular match at the beginning of the match. If you miss that, there is nowhere you can find that. Significant injuries in this WC were Colombia's James Rodriguez for the Round of 16 match against England, and Uruguay's Edinson Cavani for the same round match against France. Watching the first one on a soundless stream on a computer screen, I knew that James wasn't playing, but I could not figure out if he was on the bench or not of if he was available for the coach to use or not. A significant suspension was that of Brazil's Casemiro for the same round match against Belgium. The 2 injuries above where the players were not at all in the bench roster available for the coach, and the suspension, were all crucial for the result of these 3 elimination games. Nowhere in the match summary sheet you would be able to glean such crucial information for that game's outcome. warshy (¥¥) 00:21, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think that might start to fall under the category of WP:CRUFT. As I said, if the injury or suspension is sufficiently noteworthy (i.e. a regular starter or impact sub), then it can be mentioned in prose. What we want to avoid is turning this encyclopaedia into a stats dump. – PeeJay 14:05, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In the official match report (linked within the article) you can find a tiny little note in the line-up section, showing that Rodriguez (shirt name James) and Borja were not available during the Colombia–England game. I do not know at what time that was included in the match report; I can see however, that there already is a link to the match report for tomorrow's semi final thus implying that the info you are looking for will be there during the game.
Another tip for you, Warshy is to have a digital camera in front of you, taking a photo of the tv screen when the teams are presented before the match. Those pictures are useful when you write down the statistics in the little notebook. :) Fomalhaut76 (talk) 21:38, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was not talking about any statistics dump or a "little statistics notebook." (Both responders above seem to be implying I am just a "fanatic fan" interested in little trivia or actually junk. For the the first responder, the link given also says the implication may be uncivil...) In any case, the information I was referring to is all there in the FIFA website when you click on the match report link, from where WP takes its info also. It will just not be there in the WP match summary sheet. Oh well, too bad. Thank you. warshy (¥¥) 15:17, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I beg your pardon; my comment on the notebook might be read as a little spiteful. Having written such notebooks for all World Cups since 1986, I think I winked mostly at myself and hoped I might had found a soulmate. :) Fomalhaut76 (talk) 17:29, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No incivility was intended on my part – this is not an ad hominem attack; I'm not attacking you, I just don't think this is a good idea to include here. – PeeJay 21:58, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the information can be found in the report URL to FIFA's website (which notes absences, injuries and suspensions), along with the tactical and full time PDFs. Otherwise it would be a bit excessive to include ~11 subs for all 64 matches. S.A. Julio (talk) 22:37, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
