AFF Football Championship or ASEAN Football Championship

According to official website, this tournament is name ASEAN Football Championship, rather than AFF Football Championship, so which one is correct? --Aleenf1 09:43, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Australia Participation in AFF Suzuki Cup

I'm not sure whether  Australia would join 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup. All I know is that Australia is a member of ASEAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION, which they have the right to join the tournament.

2010 AFF Suzuki Cup

Although early days for this championship, i have found an article declaring Vietnam's interest in hosting the tournement. I have added this under the Tournements section for 2010. I think it is important to keep this information no matter how early it comes out.

I have only put a short sentance under this section, but it can be worded or edited to however it suits. But please read the reference and if anymore crop up in regional newspapers then please add and at a later date (closer to 2010 tournement) it could be tidied up. Druryfire (talk) 20:22, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Tournaments section

I think the tournament section is unnecessary. There is already a results section which also contains a link to the main articles of each edition of the tournament. The tournament section with those summaries should be placed within the main articles in a section titled "summary" or even be fit within the intro of those articles. Banana Fingers (talk) 11:16, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

I agree with you. The information in the summaries should be moved to the relevant articles. If no one opposes this, then I suggest this is done ASAP. Give a couple of days for anymore feedback on hear before I will personally start. Druryfire (talk) 21:06, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

During several automated bot runs the following external link was found to be unavailable. Please check if the link is in fact down and fix or remove it in that case!

The result of the move request was: move the pages to AFF Championship and XXXX AFF Championship, per the discussion below. Dekimasuよ! 21:45, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

– To bring the page titles in line with other international competitions such as the UEFA European Championship, the FIFA World Cup and the AFC Asian Cup, where it is prefixed by the confederation/federation followed by the official competition name. Sponsor names are excluded from page titles such as the FA Cup and the Football League Cup. As such, sponsors Tiger Beer (up to 2004 edition) and Suzuki (from 2008) should not be included in the titles when there is an official name, as shown in the 2007 edition where there is no title sponsor.[1] LRD 09:36, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. LRD 09:36, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Oppose – as per WP:COMMONNAME, the answer is a simple and straightforward NO. The ASEAN Football Championship has ALWAYS been known and commonly referred to WITH the sponsors attached... "Tiger Cup" and now "AFF Suzuki Cup" or simply "Suzuki Cup". This is with the exception of 2007 when there was no title sponsor. Surely even you would know this LRD?! Mas y mas (talk) 10:50, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Comment Now, don't get personal again and keep to the discussion. Other editors will decide based on the merits of the points. The Football League Cup is known as the Capital One Cup per WP:COMMONNAME, but sponsors come and go so they are listed as the former instead. The African Cup of Nations had Nokia as their title sponsors in 2004, MTN from 2006, Orange from 2010, and their articles are listed as "YYYY African Cup of Nations". The terms Tiger Cup, Suzuki Cup and other sponsored names will not be the definitive name for this competition but the ASEAN Football Championship will always exist and consistency is need in the application of page names here. LRD 11:26, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Comment – apart from consistency, WP:NAMINGCRITERIA actually supports to KEEP the current names! Also, the tournament has never been known as the "AFF ASEAN Football Championship". Sure it's organized by the region's governing body, the AFF, but not even the 2007 edition was known as that. It was simply "2007 ASEAN Football Championship". So moving all to "xxxx AFF ASEAN Football Championship" is just wrong. Mas y mas (talk) 12:16, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Hmm, AFF ASEAN xxx seems wrong. Because ASEAN is already included in AFF, ASEAN AFF Football Championship written out would be ASEAN Football Federation ASEAN Football Championship. So, I'd move it all to ASEAN xxx without the AFF. ASEAN Championship seems to be more used than AFF Championship. -Koppapa (talk) 12:10, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Comment The UEFA in UEFA European Championship stands for "Union of European Football Associations" and the AFC in AFC Asian Cup stands for "Asian Football Confederation". LRD 12:29, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Comment – But the for the Asian Cup, tournament pages also uses "xxxx AFC Asian Cup" even though the word "Asian" is part of AFC. I think the naming should be "xxxx AFF ASEAN Championship" or "xxxx AFF ASEAN Cup". MbahGondrong (talk) 12:39, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Comment Having AFF as a prefix would also bring the naming in line with the other AFF competitions such as the AFF U-19 Youth Championship and AFF Futsal Championship listed on the official AFF website.[2] Of note too is that the current sponsored name is "AFF Suzuki Cup". LRD 12:51, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
Comment - I'd drop the ASEAN part and just go xxxx AFF Championship. Simple as that. The youth competitions for the federation are fine, some had sponsors that were never written into the title...why is the senior competition any different? Druryfire (talk) 20:42, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

@Number 57: @Koppapa: @MbahGondrong: @Druryfire: Since we have established the need for consistency in naming of the articles without inclusion of any sponsor names, the options are:

  1. Keep the main article at "ASEAN Football Championship", and move the associated pages to "yyyy ASEAN Football Championship. The official logos for the 2000, 2002 and 2004 editions included this term.[3]
  2. Move the main article to "AFF ASEAN Football Championship", and the associated pages to "yyyy AFF ASEAN Football Championship". This would bring the naming in line with the other AFF competitions such as the AFF U-19 Youth Championship and AFF Futsal Championship named in Wikipedia and listed on the official AFF website.[4]
  3. Move the main article to "AFF Championship", and the associated pages to "yyyy AFF Championship". Similarly, this would bring the naming in line with the other AFF competitions named in Wikipedia, is the name listed at the official AFF website[5] and page header,[6] and is used in the official logo of the 2007 edition, the only one without a sponsor title.[7]

An indication of a choice leading to consensus on the name would be helpful. Thank you. LRD 02:56, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

  • I prefer "AFF ASEAN Championship", but its not one of the choices. MbahGondrong (talk) 14:01, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
  • To confuse matters further, I would go for AFF Football Championship, as it is described here (Following the stance of the World Health Organisation (WHO) on alcohol advertising, the Tiger Cup saw the exit of the brewery as the title sponsor and forced the Federation to organise the AFF Football Championship in early 2007 without a title sponsor.)
The competition has been known by variants of "AFF / ASEAN / Football / Championship" in the media and is listed with different names (ASEAN Football Championship, AFF Championship, AFF Football Championship) even on the official site. While the variants are acceptable by both the media and the AFF, what I feel we could do is to decide based on consideration of Wikipedia naming conventions and page consistency, along with the names listed on the official competition logos. Could be a bit tricky, but nothing we can't resolve through discussion. And to add, the discussion is not limited to the three options I proposed and further feedback is welcome. LRD 14:39, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
At the moment, I'm leaning towards AFF Championship as listed on the official website and the competition page header, as well as the 2007 non-sponsored logo. The prefix of "AFF" would also bring it in line with the other AFF competition pages on Wikipedia. The Euros, World Cup, Asian Cup and African Cup of Nations do not have "football" in their title so it isn't a strict requirement. Imho. LRD 15:02, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
I'm all for AFF Championship I can't really add anymore...feel this is what it simply is!Druryfire (talk) 09:36, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Survey

In view of the above discussion, I would like to revise the RM to:

ASEAN Football ChampionshipAFF Championship, and the associated pages to xxxx AFF Championship.

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.

Support all as nominator Per name listed on the official AFF main page and competition page, as well as the 2007 competition logo, the only edition without a title sponsor. This would also bring the articles in line with naming conventions seen in other AFF competitions and international competitions on Wikipedia. LRD 03:10, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

All-time ranking table

Why is it that in this table, matches that ended in extra time are also treated as draws? I know that per football convention, matches ended a.e.t. are treated as wins and losses. Please clarify. Babymissfortune 09:56, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

That's strange and should be changed then. Table is unsourced anyway. -Koppapa (talk) 10:04, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
Nice work correcting it. Did you find a source though, or had to do it by hand? -Koppapa (talk) 17:17, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
Sadly, there is no source for the whole table so I did the table based on each countries' performance per edition in each edition's wiki page (which I think has a source). Babymissfortune 16:49, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
