[edit]the ocean bottom
- Who writes crap like the above comment? Is this a really, really really, weak attempt at vandalism? I'm thourougly confused as to the motive of the person who wrote this. Nick Warren 08:15, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- If you just look at the histories of this article and it's discussion page, you'll notice that the fellow who left that comment is actually the original author of this page. :) It's actually kind of interesting...the page was written in 2004. --Chopin-Ate-Liszt! 02:43, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Covering 40% of the oceans but 60% of the Earth's surface??
[edit]Huh? My math is not that great, but this looks... erm... fishy ;-). -- 85.182.121.209 15:26, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
How does the spreading rate of the abyssal plane affect the its average depth? anyone? (KG)
Is someone ever going to fix this, or what? --76.224.93.67 15:16, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Since Earth is 70% water, 60% of the Earth's surface is 85% of the oceans, which seems quite a bit too much. However, 40% of the Earth surface is the same amout as 60% of the oceans, so the values may have been swapped. A reference needs to be found.AtikuX 02:04, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
We need a disambiguation. "Abyssal plain" also refers to the space between galaxies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.207.253.96 (talk) 21:09, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Wikiproject
[edit]Is there some sort of wikiproject on the ocean bottom? Because this article needs help. All of the names of abyssal plains are red links and there are no cited sources. I'll look for a wikiproject for it. Belugaperson (talk) 17:18, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
hi!
[edit]this seems to have all come from encyclopedia brittani...ca, though I can't say for sure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.138.63.221 (talk) 01:08, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Red Links
[edit]The links on this page are all red. Fix it. 98.221.145.89 (talk) 21:06, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Not household words
[edit]Expressions like ASDIc, CeDAMar, etc need to be introduced to the moderately prepared general reader, with a disambiguating phrase, like "the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) remotely operated vehicle, KAIKO," and a footnote as well, perhaps. Keep your audience in mind.--Wetman (talk) 23:16, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have followed your helpful suggestions, Wetman. Anti-Submarine Detection Investigation Committee (ASDIC), Census of Diversity of Abyssal Marine Life (CeDAMar), and Diversity of the deep Atlantic benthos (DIVA 1) expedition now have better introductions. Sorry about the oversight, and thanks for your thoughtful edits! Regards, DiverDave (talk) 23:45, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
GA?
[edit]Well developed article, perhaps it should be nominated for GA status at WP:GAN? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 00:45, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for the vote of support, Prokonsul Piotrus. I have put a lot of time and effort into this article to date. I just nominated the article. I both fear and look forward to the GA review process, as this will be my first time going through this gauntlet. Cheers! DiverDave (talk) 05:17, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I will make straightforward copyedits as I go. Please revert if I accidentally change the meaning. I will jot queries below. Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:44, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Due in part to their vast size, abyssal plains are currently believed to be to be a major reservoir of biodiversity - generally, one doesn't reference a statement in a lead unless controversial - is this? Also why does it need six? (issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 11:37, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- make sure all the "meters" are "metres" (or vice versa) (issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 11:37, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- Bathymetric data obtained during the course of the Challenger expedition enabled scientists to draw maps - convert reference to inline link. Comma after "maps" and before "which" (subordinate clause) (issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 13:28, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Need to fix "bare URL" references; verify all citation urls are still valid links (issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 00:14, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
- In para 3 of the 'Formation section - here is where to put inline references for nodules. I have no idea how big these nodules are supposed to be from reading it (issue addressed: created new section Exploitation of resources to explore this topic in greater depth) DiverDave (talk) 05:19, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
- fix as many redlinks as possible (issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 05:09, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
- check all wikilinks; repair all redirects (issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 05:09, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Paras 2 and 4 need inline references(issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 16:51, 26 June 2010 (UTC)- Maybe just put List of Abyssal plains in a separate article/list (issue addressed) DiverDave (talk) 16:51, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Other items needing attention:
- Could summarise in lead in one or two sentences the biological makeup of life in the abyssal plains
- Any other information on regional variation would be good to add
Para 5 of Formation section, paras 2 and 3 of Discovery section, para 1 after Cold seeps, para 10 of Biodiversity need inline references
Overall, pretty good. Some niggles above and I think you're there. Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:03, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
Otherwise, looking pretty good.
Okay - passed overall. well done. Minor things left above not dealbreakers. Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:23, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Can this article be a Good article with so many {{citation needed}} tags?
[edit]This article has several. Shouldn't they be fixed before the article is passed? MacDaid (talk) 21:26, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- Missed them. There are two outstanding. I will notify article author and give 48 hours. Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
ASDIC
[edit]According to the Wikipedia sonar page, ASDIC does NOT stand for 'Anti-Submarine Detection Investigation Committee.' From the sonar article:
" In 1939, in response to a question from the Oxford English Dictionary, the Admiralty made up the story that it stood for 'Allied Submarine Detection Investigation Committee', and this is still widely believed, though no committee bearing this name has been found in the Admiralty archives.[7]"

Where does the sediment on the abyssal plain come from
[edit]I need a lot of help with this--2602:304:AB3B:18E9:C62:D994:BDFA:C3B0 (talk) 22:52, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
Suggestions for improvement
[edit]In the "Oceanic Zones" segment, the table could be greatly enhanced by a column showing light penetration in the various zones. In addition, the "comment section" could be improved by stating the "usual" degree of deviation from average temperatures - rather than simply stating that temperatures may get as high as 464C, including parenthetic Fahrenheit temperatures and references to specific locations where hydrothermal vents are present.
I know nothing about oceanography but found this article very interesting and hope that contributors will do all they can to make it more understandable to those of us new to the subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.248.29.2 (talk) 15:48, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- I also know nothing about oceanography and came here to learn. Unfortunately, I found the section on oceanic zones extremely confusing.
- Why does an article on the abyssal plain spend so much verbage discussing the top layers of the ocean (without discussing why that's important to the abyssal plain)? I could see a single paragraph describing the place of the abyssal plain in the aquatic layers, but the depths and temperatures of the top layers and discussion of light penetration don't seem applicable to the abyssal plain and just clutter the section.
- Why are there three different tables/illustrations of the different zones, each with differing specificity? If different terms are used in the field (e.g., "hadal zone" and "hadopelagic zone"), it would be helpful if the terminology was consistent for most of the article with perhaps a brief mention of other terms as an aside.
- Why does the "Oceanic zones" section have a "main article" link to oceanic zone (a specific "maritime habitat", not an overview of "oceanic zones" or "aquatic layers")? Pelagic zone may be a better main article link (as "Aquatic layer" redirects to it)?
- I don't know enough about oceanography to feel comfortable taking a stab at these things myself. Anyone? munin (talk) 05:26, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
