Article is very long - propose splitting off discussion of New York City

[edit]

Hello, I put the "very long" tag on the article. I propose splitting off discussion of New York City into a new page called "New York City Housing Crisis." This would match up with San Francisco housing shortage. Off course, this is open to discussion. Thanks. Seahawk01 (talk) 03:35, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am here from the note at WP:WikiProject Home Living.
I recommend splitting off all the "Affordable housing by country" section into a new article titled Affordable housing by country. From there anyone could again split sections as they develop and as needed.
That San Francisco article is sort of related to a general article called California housing shortage. "Affordable housing" and "housing shortages" as topics might be possible to reconcile in a common hierarchy but it would take some discussion to justify equating the topics to build out a category including SF, NYC, and others. For quick cleanup I say split it at the higher level. Articles like this often get the "by country" section split out.
If I can help then ping me. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:17, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Bluerasberry, how about if we set up a sidebar template to tie together the issues of affordability, housing shortages and homelessness, since they all seem to relate. For example, Vancouver is suffering a crisis in affordability, but I can't find a page on it. On the other hand, there is a page on Homelessness in Vancouver. And Homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area could be read alongside San Francisco housing shortage
Other than that, I like your approach to split this page by country first. Should we wait a week or two to see if more people wander in?
Thanks again Seahawk01 (talk) 03:32, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Seahawk01: I think we can do the split now. Obviously the page is big enough to require a split and the regional content is an obvious choice because it is not of general global interest. Would you like to execute it?
I post side boxes or navboxes on the bottom sometime. Do it if you like. I recommend doing more general topics in the valuable article real estate at the top and doing more niche topics, like city specific content, in the less valuable article real estate at the bottom where there is more room.
I can help with any of this if you ask. Thanks.
@Bluerasberry:, thanks for all the input. I will ping you for review when I put a sidebar or nav on Affordable housing. Since I'm pretty new to Wikipedia, can you split the page and I can follow along? I'll also help out if you need any assistance. Seahawk01 (talk) 02:04, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Seahawk01: I made the split to Affordable housing by country. Check it out! It is no big deal for you as a new user to do these splits in the future. You will find them in lots of places as many editors are quick to add info for additional countries, but fewer people notice when the section by country is getting too long.
It helps to have a lead for that article and a little context for this one. The ideal content would be a summary of a source which generalizes how affordable housing can vary by country. I am not sure that we have such a source identified right now, so having a nearly blank section is awkward but it works for now.
Sure, ping me when you have your sidebar. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:42, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bluerasberry:, this is spectacular! Thanks for your help. The main article looks great. By country is also pretty cool...I'm impressed.
I'll try to write a lead soon summarizing data sources for Affordable housing by country. I took a quick look on google and there are decent sources. Thanks again and will ping you :-) Seahawk01 (talk) 06:11, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Information about sustainability, design and examples

[edit]

The article provides accurate and complete information about a broad series of elements in affordable housing, yet focuses in economic or political views, barely including information about environmental sustainability, about the design and organizational elements of construction, and lacks examples of existing successful projects. The issue of affordable housing relates to the government responsibility to ensure safety and basic needs to all, but it also has a more profound and human approach that deals with how context can significantly influence the development of individuals. I would like to add a section of how sustainability is being applied to improve the quality of these projects, to add information about the basic design proposals that rule this typology and finally to provide a list of global projects that have been implemented (considering projects that deal with different types of inhabitants: migrants, indigenous communities, low-income citizens, etc.). Considering how certain design decisions affect quality of life is key to the creation of successful projects and understanding the resilience that these projects offer can also allow for a better adaptation or response to future conditions: social, environmental or cultural.

I think this would be a great addition. Maybe and "enviroment and health" section? There are a few mentions of health throughout the article that could be consolidated. Joiedevivre123321 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 22:16, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am an undergraduate at UCSD in the course Introduction to Policy Analysis and I am assigned to complete various Wikipedia Contributions. Affordable housing provides a great example of the economic decisions involved in the policymaking process and that is why I have chosen to contribute to this article. I think sustainability would be a great addition to the topic of affordable housing and I will be glad to research and create this section. Hhumberstone (talk) 00:38, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Need a clarification in public policy section

[edit]

In the section "Affordable housing and public policy" there is this paragraph, which I don't understand:

Ann Owen wonders if the housing market helped reduced poverty concentration in the National longitudinal data between the years of 1977–2008 with the concentration of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. Data information is to compare or intertwine with the differences of national housing subsidies, the entry, exit, and enhancement of low-income housing.

By what mechanism could "the housing market" help reduce poverty concentration? And what does the second sentence mean? Fusiongate (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 04:02, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. They are not discussing the results of a study. They seem to just state that someone named Ann Owen considered this issue. We either need the results of the study or this should be removed IMO. Joiedevivre123321 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 22:13, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Affordable Housing Photo

[edit]

Hi all,

Might we considering updating the page's primary photo? The tower-block style of affordable housing is far from the norm at this point. Many countries including the United States, Canada, and France are attempting to remove these tower-block developments and replace them with lower-rise developments. The picture is not representative of modern public housing for much of the world. Furthermore, this photo represents some older public housing projects but the article discusses several kinds of affordable housing (included in market-rate such as inclusionary zoning, naturally occurring affordable housing, affordable market-rate units, etc.).

I feel the photo does not represent affordable housing today and perpetuates the stereotype that affordable housing is large, out-of-place, and "against neighborhood character".

Please let me know your thoughts! Joiedevivre123321 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 20:53, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Improving Organization and Clean Up

[edit]

Hi all,

Here are some suggestions on starting to clean up and organize this article.

  • Move “the notion of…” section and quote out of the introduction.
  • Move all mentions of measuring affordable housing to the “Measuring housing affordability” section. There are numerous methods mentioned throughout the article.
  • Remove the “housing expenditures” section. The first paragraph should be moved to “measuring housing affordability”. The second and third paragraphs should be moved to an Ireland article and removed from this one.
  • Under “Other housing expenditures” Section
  • Remove “Some organizations and agencies consider the cost of purchasing a single-family home; others look exclusively at the cost of renting an apartment.”
  • The last three paragraphs are about measuring affordability and should be moved to that section
  • Growing density convergence and regional urbanization Section
  • The first paragraph should be removed because it includes no citations
  • The second two paragraphs should be moved to the public policy section because they are not related to regional urbanization/density convergence
  • Economy Section
  • Find sources or remove the first three sentences because they have no sources
  • Put the “labor market performance” as a subsection of economy
  • Affordable Housing and Public Policy Section
  • Remove “Ann Owen wonders if the housing market helped reduced poverty concentration in the National longitudinal data between the years of 1977–2008 with the concentration of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. Data information is to compare or intertwine with the differences of national housing subsidies, the entry, exit, and enhancement of low-income housing.” because it is not a fact or study result.
  • Perhaps divide into sections? I.e market-driven vs subsidized vs public?
  • This section is also very USA/Canada/Western Europe focused — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joiedevivre123321 (talkcontribs) 23:15, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions Hi! Here are a couple of suggestions I have for this article:

  • There are missing citations for the information presented in the "Differing Parameters and Limitations of Approaches" section of the article.
  • I think it might be beneficial to introduce a comparison to a non-western country's definition of affordable housing in the "Definitions" section.
  • The section on the Social and Environmental impacts of affordable housing only addresses the urban social impacts and does not directly discuss the environmental impacts of this type of housing. A better explanation of the environmental costs of increased reliance on transportation would be helpful.
  • I think that the Economics section could be organized differently. Instead of the initial bulleted list, the information within this list could be distributed across the proper subsections. I think that this switch will make the sections easier to understand by providing a clear organization of ideas and links.Nmarrewa (talk) 05:34, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Further Suggestions

  • I believe the Economics section needs to be thoroughly revised. The article does not indicate the source from which it draws the "Causes and consequences of rises in housing prices", nor does it consistently cite the listed concepts. In addition, the article does not consistently cite "Supply and Demand" or any of its subsections.
  • For example, in the "supply and demand" sublist, the article only cites one out of three listed causes of housing price rises, and the source utilized is not reliable as it comes from "Hanover", a private business that can no longer be found through a Google Search and that shows no qualifications to contribute to the public discourse on affordable housing.
  • Another example is the "Factors that affect tenure choices (ex. owner occupier, private rented, social rented)" subsection, where all but one concept is cited and the citation utilized does not have a working link anymore. Tiradoucsd (talk) 05:48, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adding citations and make the information more specific and reliable

[edit]

Under the contents of Economics, there is a section called inequality and housing, which talks about that the income inequality leads to the need of affordable housing, which brings burden to the local economics and further impacts long-term economics. Citations should be added to the last few sentences of this section, which should be from reliable sources that explain the relationship between affordable housing and income inequality that brings negative impacts toward the economics. Moreover, if it is possible some statistical evidence should be added, which can make the readers understand the impact more clearly while they want to know information about affordable housing. Lastly, several sections under economics need more citations, which the editor did not put any citations while listing the factors.

Under the content of affordable housing by country, the editor added the different actions of countries planing and building affordable housing. Some pictures can be added to let the readers see how the affordable housing differ by countries.

Under the content of Notable people, the editor can provide a short summary of “Homes for America”, which briefly explain what does it. The editor can do this by researching on reliable contents regarding “Homes for America”, and provide neutral facts about it. Since “Homes for America” is something related to the affordable housing, it should be noted in this Wikipedia page. Moreover, readers would able to see more information about notable people and what have they done.

Lastly, citations should be added for sections: “Differing parameters and limitations in approaches”, “Market-based approaches”, “Government restriction on affordable housing”.

Social and environmental impacts: Home Values And Source 50 is no longer workintg

[edit]

Suggestions

I think the section on Home values should be developed some more, someone skimming and going straight to the Home Value it seems like the section is incomplete.

Currently it is: "According to a 2022 study, LIHTC projects in the United States increase land value in surrounding neighborhoods."

However in this section the study's reasoning isn't explained or summarized at all.

I think further explanation and reading into the study is needed to further develop a solid conclusion as a possible what or why there is an increase to the land value. The cited 2022 study mentioned in the Home values section titled: "Effects of concentrated LIHTC development on surrounding house prices" by Richard Voith mentions in it's abstract that "This paper examines the effects of introducing additional LIHTC developments in urban neighborhoods to determine whether the concentration of these affordable housing properties negatively affects local home values. " Also found within the abstract is the acknowledgement that "While numerous studies have examined the spillover effects of these properties on local property values," meaning that Voith's study should be considered alongside other sources that look at the spillover effects of these properties on other local property values.

Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities Assignment

[edit]

I would like to add to this Wikipedia article on affordable housing. Housing is a complex commodity which has both macro- and microeconomic consequences. I’m interested in reporting on the ways in which racial stereotypes and discrimination accumulate across the distinct, but connected stages of housing exchange. I also want to reorganize the article a bit and adjust some of the grammatical choices (e.g. one section does not have correct capitalization). I've come up with 10 citations I would like to add to the content of this article--these are listed on my user page. Efloden (talk) 01:46, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please go for it :) Joiedevivre123321 (talk) 11:06, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you :) I've decided to create a new article specifically focused on affordable housing in the United States. I'm planning on removing some of the information from the "United States" section of theAffordable housing by country article to put it into my new article. I have details about my plans on my user page, as well as a draft of my proposed plans/references in my sandbox: User:Efloden/Affordable housing in the United States#Article Draft. I'd appreciate any feedback on my work! Efloden (talk) 03:21, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
