Alan Saret/Representation and Bio

[edit]

I am Alan Saret, a self-represented artist, the subject of an article in Wikipedia. Collectors of my work who want to resell often leave their work with a gallery; in my case, the James Cohan Gallery is the most prominent locus of sales. I have never met James Cohan or been to his gallery, and have never had any contractual relation with him, although there is now a work in his possession belonging to me which I consigned under duress, because it was in a storage warehouse which closed; they threatened to destroy the work if it were not picked up shortly. It was too large to get back into the studio, and so I made an arrangement with James Cohan to receive it.

At one point, there was enough of my work on the secondary market for James Cohan to have a solo exhibition. I refused his invitation to contribute to the show. Nevertheless, the show was advertised and announced under the name of Alan Saret - just in the same manner as one would do for an artist actually represented, or for a deceased artist whose estate one is legally entitled to represent. As a result, friends, relatives, writers, gallerists and museum people were all given the impression that Alan Saret is represented by the James Cohan Gallery. Art collectors too were under this impression, much to my detriment, since I am self-represented. Selling work is my only source of income. Therefore, the Wikipdia article concerning me compromises my ability to earn a living, since it states that I am represented by the James Cohan Gallery. Also, when the Bio link is clicked, the James Cohan website appears. This is most objectionable, because it implies a link which does not in fact exist. A fairly good bio of me is on the Artsy website, which would be a better link, since they have never claimed or given the impression of representing me. I will present my own bio when I find time to update it.
