Accuracy & Structure
[edit]I believe it is not correct to write that Gibbs' brigade became the 1st Cavalry Division. According to Boatner's Civil War Dictionary, Gibbs commanded the division for only a few days in February 1865. In my opinion, there are too many headings. I used to put a lot of headings in my own articles but editors have suggested that I get away from that. If you can get any details (who commanded the division, what did Gibbs' brigade do, what regiments made up his brigade) about the battles Gibbs' brigade fought in from other sources, that would be a nice thing to add, but not critical. - You are correct. I left out the words "part of" which are in the source I used (Warner). I have added a few more details which I derived from Boatner and added Boatner notes and the Boatner book as a reference. I have reduced the number of headings. I agree that there were too many headings, especially for the small amount of information under each one. Since the related information under them could be easily consolidated into two topics and remain consistent, I made that change. Your comments helped me to correct, expand and improve the article. - I had forgotten to look at the orders of battle or tables of organization when I made the previous revisions so I went back to look at those. I should have looked at Boatner closer to begin with, although a close look at Sifakis would have given me the same information. Warner's briefer summary runs all this together and makes it appear as though Gibbs was a brigade commander from the time he took over the Cavalry Reserve Brigade of the Army of the Potomac in early 1864. In fact, although Gibbs had brigade commands much of the time during 1864 and early 1865, they were intermittent and temporary. At times, he must have reverted to his regimental command. He did not get a permanent brigade command until near the end of the war. I will straighten this out and put the correct dates and commands, as well as his division commander at Petersburg (Thomas C. Devin), also his brigade commander for much of his time in the Army of Shenandoah, and list the regiments of the brigade. I have learned a few things: some summaries may not be complete, one needs to consult as many sources as one has available, one needs to pay attention to the dates of changes in position - they may have gaps that mean something. Here is a benefit of your other suggestion to check the tables of organization. It led me to discover the gaps in Gibbs' brigade commands. I should be able to get this done tonight. Thanks, again.Donner60 (talk) 22:27, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Gibbs turns out to have had a detailed history during the Civil War due to frequent changes of responsibility and location. Initially, I deleted the sub-headings but the American Civil War section became so long with the additional information that I found about him, I thought I needed to put back a few sub-headings for clarity.Donner60 (talk) 07:14, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
