Suggested updates/corrections May 2020
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
I work at the Allen Institute and would like to request some updates/corrections to this page: The Allen Institute for Brain Science is a division of the Allen Institute. The Allen Institute is more accurately described as a bioscience research institute than a medical research institute. As of April 2020, Hongkui Zeng, Ph.D., is Executive Vice President and Director. (Allan Jones is CEO of the Allen Institute, not the Allen Institute for Brain Science.) Christof Koch, Ph.D., is now Chief Scientist of the Mindscope Program (listed under key people). Under History and Funding, I'd suggest the following addition to clarify the Allen Institute for Brain Science's relationship to the Allen Institute: The Allen Institute for Brain Science is a scientific division of the Allen Institute, a nonprofit research organization that also includes the Allen Institute for Cell Science, launched in 2014 (ref 1), The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, launched in 2016 (ref 2), and the Allen Institute for Immunology, launched in 2018 (ref 3). All four divisions of the Allen Institute are housed in the same building in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood (ref 4). ref 1: https://www.forbes.com/sites/fayeflam/2014/12/08/biologists-get-100-million-from-billionaire-paul-allen-to-investigate-cells/#1cccceb4cdc1 ref 2: https://www.geekwire.com/2016/paul-allen-starts-frontiers-group-program-bioscience-research-100-million/ ref 3: : https://www.statnews.com/2018/12/12/paul-allen-institute-gift-human-immunology/ ref 4: https://www.geekwire.com/2015/old-meets-new-allen-institute-reconstructs-historic-facade-on-new-seattle-building/
Under Online Public Resources: Allen Cell Type Database, replace the last sentence (Future releases will contain genetic profiles of each individual cell and will also include information on human cells.) with: In 2017, the Allen Institute added data from human brain cells to the database. ref: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/10/25/559819023/scientists-and-surgeons-team-up-to-create-models-of-living-human-brain-cells
A new public resource has been added since this page was made, proposed content: Allen Brain Observatory The Allen Brain Observatory was launched in 2016 (ref 1) to capture cellular-level activity of neurons in the mouse visual cortex. Experiments through the Observatory use visual or electrical readouts of neural activity as animals see different visual stimuli, ranging from natural images to black and white grid lines to a clip from the Orson Welles film noir, Touch of Evil. In 2018, the Institute opened the Observatory for research projects proposed by scientists from the broader community through a program called OpenScope, which was modeled after large-scale shared physics observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope (ref 2). ref 1: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/science/what-happens-if-you-show-a-mouse-a-movie-allen-institute-opens-new-window-into-living-brain/ ref 2: https://www.geekwire.com/2018/openscope-gives-neuroscientists-time-allen-institutes-telescope-brain/ Testarossa7 (talk) 20:08, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Testarossa7: Hi, I have added the {{Request edit/significant}} template to ensure that it is listed at Category:Requested edits. I myself am taking a short break from work, & am thus unable to fulfill your request at this time, but I am hopeful that another editor can attend to this in a timely manner.
