Numerous Errors[edit]

"Fernandez Maturette (died ca. 1939) was an inmate on Devil's Island who attempted to escape with Henri Charriere, Louis Dega, and Joanes Clusiot. Maturette was born in Argentina and sent to Devil's Island for murder. On the night of November 21, 1933, Maturette escaped from the hsopital on Devil's Island with Henri Charriere, Louis Dega, and Joanes Clusiot. The four went to a leper colony and bought a boat from the leper chief Toussaint. They were all recaptured in Santa Marta and were sent to solitary confinement. Maturette and Clusiot died while in solitary. Henri Charrier successfully escaped from Devil's Island on a bag of coconuts and Louis Dega remained on Devil's Island the rest of his life. Robert Deman acted Maturette in the film Papillon."

"Fernandez Maturette" - I don't believe his first name is revealed in the book.

"Clusiot" - correct spelling is Clousiot.

"Maturette and Clusiot died while in solitary" - Clousiot dies shortly after being released from solitary. Maturette's death is NOT recorded in Papillon.

"Louis Dega remained on Devil's Island the rest of his life" - Dega was never on Devil's Island. --Bobogoat 16:57, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In his book, "Papillon", Henri Charrière gives Maaturette's first name as André.

I believe that the discrepancies listed above arise from the current version of this article being based on the film rather than Charrière's own account.

I am concerned that the date of death of 1939 is also derived purely from the film (where Maturette is portrayed as dying after the 2 years in solitary confinement imposed as punishment for the 1937 escape attempt).

Since the director of the 1973 film "Papillon" has stated that his purpose was simply "ro entertain", whilst Charrière states that his account is factual, I propose that the book should be considered authoritative over the film in cases of discrepancy. Velada 05:48, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Fernandez Maturette" seems to be a conflation of two people:

Fernandez was a convict with whom, along with Louis Dega, Papilllon originally planned to escpae from the infirmary; he actually went with Maturette and Clousiot.

The birthplace of Argentina apllies to Fernandez.

Also, the infirmary was on the mainland, not Devil's Island.Velada 00:02, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In Banco it is mentioned that Maturette is living in Venezuela in the 1950s, Charrière meets him there and attends his wedding.87.194.8.74 (talk) 10:33, 17 August 2010 (UTC).[reply]

semi-fictional character - article should be rewritten[edit]

This article should be about 1. The real person (or persons) that inspired the character Maturette in the books "Papillon" and "Banco".

2. The fictional character Maturette in the book "Papillon" and the sequel "Banco".

3. The fictional character played by Robert Deman in the 1973 movie "Pappillon" and the differences with the book.
