Brief review

[edit]

Hi, this is an interesting article. As per the request on my talk page, I have conducted a quick review of the article. I have the following points (I can't comment much on the content, so I've focused mainly on style and presentation):

  • the article appears to rely heavily on a primary source (the Oldham papers), which I think might be an obstacle to a higher rating. Are there more secondary sources that could be consulted, or used to confirm the primary source? Done I have added several secondary sources.
  • I have added some citation needed tags where I feel more citations are needed: DoneAleutian06 21:33, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
  • I suggest having the article copy edited by the Guild of Copy Editors, as they will be able to tighten up the prose a bit; Done
  • I think the way that the lead introduces the topic needs work. Currently the article ostensibly refers to itself in the first sentence, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it. For a good example of an overview article and the way it introduces the topic, see Military history of Australia during World War II which is an FA;  DoneAleutian06 21:33, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
  • in the lead there are a number of terms that could/should be linked, e.g. "Confederate", "1840s war with Mexico", "Governor Conway"; "Arkansas Army National Guard", etc.;
  • in the lead "the Nation" should not be capitalised, but instead should be replaced with "the United States" - it is more specific and removes the perception of a US point of view;  DoneAleutian06 16:02, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
  • in the Status of the Arkansas State Militia section, the block quote needs a citation beside it; DoneAleutian06 16:02, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
  • the use of abbreviations for ranks is inconsistent. For instance you use "COL" in the table for most of the entries, but spell out "Major General" and "Brigadier General", but then also have "Col" and "Colonel"; but then also "CPT", "Capt.", "Lieut." - the style should be consistent;
  • there is inconsistency in the style for dates, for instance sometimes Day Month Year and then sometimes Month Day, Year (e.g. "14 January 1861" and then later "February 23, 1861") either way is fine under the Manual of Style, but consistency is the key;
  • its best to avoid using contstructs like "ibid" in citations on Wikipedia, due to the fluidity of articles it often means that they can become orphaned and readers will be confused; DoneAleutian06 16:02, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
  • in the references/citations, the web urls should be hidden with a template per WP:LINKROT;
  • the references/citations to the same source could be consolidated per WP:NAMEDREFS; DoneAleutian06 16:02, 9 January 2011 (UTC) Yobot acutally did this for us!
  • if you would like some more involved comments, you might consider requesting a formal peer review. AustralianRupert (talk) 09:05, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Great comments! I really appreciate the way you always provide a helpful To-do list to inprove articles in your reviews. I will get to work on this To-do list as soon as I finish the break up of Arkansas Army National GuardAleutian06 12:37, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Second review

[edit]

Good work so far. I have gone through the article a couple of times over the past few days and have done a bit of a copy edit (unfortunately though American English is not my strong suit). I believe that the article generally meets the standards for B class now (although there are a couple more citations needed, I'm prepared to rate it B class because on the whole it is very well referenced). The next stage I feel is to aim for GA, but there is a bit of work to do before then. I have the following points for review:

  • I strongly suggest getting someone who is comfortable with US English to copy edit the article;
  • you might consider putting the article up for peer review at WP:MHPR. I strongly suggest doing this if you are considering nominating it for GA;
  • there is some inconsistency in presentation, e.g. "First Division" and "1st Division" - these should be consistent;
  • check the formatting of the block quotes, some appear to have quotation marks but some do not;
  • in the Arkansas leaves the Union section there is a "citation needed" tag that needs to be rectified; DoneAleutian06 16:32, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
  • in the General Hindman organizes a new army section there is a "citation needed" tag that needs to be rectified;; DoneAleutian06 16:38, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
  • in the Arkansas leaves the Union section, the letter from Burgevin might be better presentation in a text box, as per the examples in the Battle of Mughar Ridge article (which is currently undergoing an A-class review); Done
  • the date format is inconsistent, some ddmmyyyy (e.g 10 July 1860) and some mmddyyyy (e.g February 5, 1861) - a consistent style should be used throughout the article;
  • should "unionist" be capitalised as "Unionist" (being a derivative of the proper noun "Union")?
  • should "Volunteer Companies" be capitalised as it is? If it is a proper noun, yes, but if not it shouldn't be;
  • in the Volunteer companies organized from state militia section, in the table there are a couple of instances of "1860?". Instead of displaying this unknown information in the table, it might be best to add a Footnote explaining that there is a discrepancy; DoneAleutian06 16:33, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
  • in the References the bare url chains should be embedded into the titles of the {{cite web}} template or some other method;
  • in the References, there are a number of references that could be consolidated per WP:NAMEDREFS. AustralianRupert (talk) 10:46, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the review. I really appreciate your checklists. I wish more editors would provide them. I will get to work cleanin g it up. I don't plan to work on GA until I get the whole Arkansas National Guard Series up to a B rating.Aleutian06 16:10, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
No worries at all, keep up the good work. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 07:00, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

conspicuous

[edit]

This edit changed "conspicouns [sic]" to "conspicuous [sic]". I have restored the bad spelling and changed the format of the "sic" so that AWB can spell-check the rest, but ideally this should be checked against the source. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:16, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and suggestions

[edit]
Actually Capitol is correct where it is used as part of the reference to the Kie Oldham Papers which are housed at the Arkansas History Commission which is located in the state Capitol complex in the Capital city of Little Rock. Aleutian06 14:37, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
