That's easy, shirt stores elastic energy (mostly in so called "chest plate" part of it) while lowering barbell to chest (or in case of unlucky lifter prevents it at all), and expands it while pressing up in the first portion of lift. Rest is on the lifter and is matter of strong lockout (triceps). The tricky part is mastering the process, and that's why estimating "how much" shirt gives is pointless. Moreover, they are not simple canvas or polyester shirts but more and more sophisticated devices, similar thing could be said about technique and training to utilize them to the fullest. 94.78.188.4 (talk) 12:55, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It should be explained in the article how they are made, as in which material goes where. Since canvas is a stiff material. Now powerlifting is secretive but this can be explained since there are rules about fabrication.
