Contested deletion[edit]

I oppose speedy deletion. A major reform of the welfare system in the UK. Needs expansion rather than deletion and drive-by tagging. --Ulcerspar12 (talk) 16:06, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

"Welfare cap" versus "Benefit cap"[edit]

It seems to me that this article confuses two different things. The benefit cap is the maximum amount that individual households can claim in benefits, whereas the welfare cap is the total spending that the Government is supposed to limit itself to. See the two newspaper articles below for examples of the latter:

George Osborne plans to breach Treasury welfare spending cap - The Guardian

Welfare cap could encourage Ministers to 'fiddle' benefit spending - The Telegraph

And in fact, linked from the Guardian article is the following official page which says the following:

The welfare cap

This policy limits the total amount that Government can spend on certain benefits, including tax credits and housing benefit. Not to be confused with the household benefits cap which limits the amount individual households can receive.

The welfare cap on specified elements of social security spending is not to be confused with the household benefit cap – introduced in 2013 – which limits total household benefits at £500 per week for a family and £350 per week for a single person with no children (subject to certain exemptions).

Proposed split[edit]

This article combines two easily-confused topics. Throughout the article's history editors seem to have confused the welfare cap and the benefit cap. Indeed, the article's title "Benefit cap and Welfare cap" is a clue to the problem, as titles containing "and" often indicate problematic articles (WP:AND). I have gone through the article clarifying which topic the content refers to. I now suggest that a content split (WP:CONSPLIT) is used to create two separate articles out of this one: a Welfare cap article and a Benefit cap article. - Polly Tunnel (talk) 10:18, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I support doing this. I think there is just about enough material to make it worthwhile. It certainly is a bit of a mess of an article.
