Subspecies & range?

[edit]

Hi BhagyaMani, I added the subspecies as currently recorded at the IOC list [1] - but these seem to have a much wider distribution than the peninsular one shown by the IUCN [2]. It appears to me that the IUCN assessment strictly only treats the nominate subspecies, which does have that range. Would you agree? Should a note be placed in this regard? - As the entire genus has been reclassified and re-split recently, this is probably a related confusion. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 21:53, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As I understood, duvaucelii has been split in 2014, and the former subspecies cyanotis is recognised as a species now, i.e. blue-eared barbet P. cyanotis. I'm merely following taxonomy used in respective IUCN Red Lists, which both refer to del Hoyo et al. (2014). See also the announcement in Inskipp and Collar (2014). "Notable taxonomic changes proposed for Asian birds in 2014" at http://people.ds.cam.ac.uk/cns26/njc/Papers/2015%20Inskipp%20&%20Collar,%20Taxonomic%20changes%20proposed%20for%20Asian%20birds%202014.pdf -- BhagyaMani (talk) 23:34, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just checked www.worldbirdnames.org ref'ed by you: this follows a taxonomy proposed in 2013, so subspecies list is probably outdated. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 23:50, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that makes sense. IOC updates seem to be frequent overall but not necessarily rapid for any given species. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 01:58, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
