Safonov was KIA on the 30 May - PQ 16 was reached the ports of destination on 29. May. Its may be a soviet propaganda storry. Regards URTh (talk) 17:35, 11 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that User:URTh. However, I found "30 May 1942: German Ju88 aircraft of KG 30 unsuccessfully attacked convoy PQ 16 before it arrived at Murmansk, Russia. The antiaicraft fire from the convoy escorts plus Russian aircraft broke up the German air attack. 19:00 - Convoy PQ 16 arrived in the Kola Inlet..." from World War II Sea War, Vol 6: The Allies Halt the Axis Advance by Donald A Bertke, Gordon Smith, Don Kindell (p. 120). Also "30 May 1942 21 ships of the Allied convoy PQ-16 arrived in the Kola Inlet near Murmansk, Russia at 1600 hours" from World War II Database - Arctic Convoys 21 Aug 1941 - 30 May 1945. An account of the 30 May air battle (including German sources) is in The Defeat of the Luftwaffe: The Eastern Front 1941-45, A Strategy for Disaster by Jonathan Trigg (chapter 15).
