Untitled[edit]

Just to say that I'd welcome any contributions to the article, particularly in the areas of:

  • An illustration. I've tracked down some that were posted to alt.binaries.pictures.rail on April 13, 1998 (they can be retrieved via [1]), but, from what I can see, these seem to be part of John Click's collection, copyright in which belongs to the Science and Society Picture Library. In addition to the photos, there's a drawing that doesn't look original, but it's safe to assume, under the circumstances, that it's copyright. There are models of CC1 out there, and an image of one of these might be a possibility.
  • Comments on CC1 from other works about Bulleid, particularly Kevin Robertson's books.
  • Clarification on what exactly became of CC1. I have cited three sources claiming that it was broken up in 1965; however, Shepherd (p. 76) says that the boiler was "retained for possible stationary use." (I'll work that into the article soon.) I've heard somewhere else that the boiler definitely did go for stationary use, but I can't cite it at the moment. More intriguingly still, some sources (again, nothing that's to hand for citation purposes) say that the chassis survived for years (from memory, some sources say that it was turned into a well wagon, some that it just sat around). I recently came across this [2], which seems to be the chassis of CC1 in "the late 1970s."
  • I'm also aware the material on 361 could do with some expansion, although I'm conscious of the need to avoid prefacing the discussion of CC1 itself with too much background material.

The 24 pp. illustrated softcover book(let) `The Turf Burner - Ireland's Last Steam Locomotive Design' by J.W.P. Rowledge, dated 1972 (no ISBN), published by the Irish Railway Record Society (IRRS) gives an illustrated summary of the story of CC1. The text is rather brief, apart from a general history of turf-burning locomotives. In its favour it has a general arrangement drawing showing detailed internal structure absent from E. Shepherd's book. It also has colour versions of the `Gas Circuit', `Steam Circuit' and `Feed water Piping' drawings which are shown in monochrome on pp. 55-57 of Shepherd's book (apparently without acknowledgement). Presumably Rowledge's book is long out of print but the IRRS could possibly help. Barney Bruchstein (talk) 16:16, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Boiler[edit]

The final design section seems to contradict itself about CC1's boiler: "A double-ended boiler, comprising two square barrels and a single central firebox, was located in the central part of the locomotive... The overall layout resembled a Double Fairlie, although CC1 differed in having only one boiler". The description of the double-ended boiler with a single central firebox sounds exactly like the layout of a Double Fairlie boiler. Can anyone shed light on this?
