Cachapoal wine photo
[edit]In the wine world, one of the most significant signs that a region has become notable is when its name starts appearing on wine labels. For many years, wines produce from Cachapoal were lumped in as part of a generic "Central Valley" label. Some more respectable bottlings would have a slightly more specific (but still relatively generic) Rapel Valley designation. So the fact that wines are now being made with the Cachapoal Valley listed on the label is a big deal. It is in the same way that vineyards become notable when they start appearing on wine labels as a single vineyard designation. It is a statement that the quality of fruit from a particular area is good enough, and the area is notable enough, to be on the label and not blended away as a mass regional bulk wine.
The purpose of images is to illustrate important and encyclopedic facts about the topic. So while, yes, an image of a vineyard that can provide some visual for the climate and geography of the region would be useful, we unfortunately don't seem to have a free use image available of a vineyard in Cachapoal. As having free use content is one of the central pillars of Wikipedia, it is important to make use of free-use images when have them.
As WP:PERTINENCE notes, "Because the Wikipedia project is in a position to offer multimedia learning to its audience, images are an important part of any article's presentation. Effort should therefore be made to improve quality and choice of images or captions in articles rather than favoring their removal, especially on pages which have few visuals." Currently the article has not a single wine-related picture despite the section on the wine industry of the region being the largest section in the entire article. Having a picture that clearly shows the Cachapoal Valley on the label (and also identifies wine grapes being grown in the region) serves an encyclopedic purpose. Until a better free-use alternative is provided there is no reason why this section should go unillustrated. AgneCheese/Wine 23:12, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- I agree with most of your points, Agne. However, I believe the picture in question (which I removed) would be better suited for an article entirely devoted to the Valley of Cachapoal production. I may not be the only one who will think that the wine label will serve more for promotion of the product than for educational purposes. Everyone knows how a bottle of wine looks. A picture like File:Valle peumo.JPG might be better suited for this article (which is about the administrative unit, the province, and not specifically about the valley), to illustrate how does it look. It's not an image of the greatest quality of all, but it does serve better in this article than the bottle of wine. I hope not to have been excessively redundant. - Well its not about the bottle of wine but more the fact that Cachapoal is now being featured on wine labels. I could care less about the particular winery, I just care about the grape varieties and regions being featured. In WP:WINE circles, I'm probably one of the most anti-spam editors you'll find and often get accused of being a "deletionist" for taking a rather hardline stance on winery notability. But if you want to keep this article focused on the administrative details then it probably is a good idea to splinter off the wine production details for its own article. Cachapoal is certainly becoming notable enough as a wine region to warrant it and you could make a fair argument that the current state of this article is out of balance with so few administrative details compared to the wine section. I'll add a Cachapoal Valley wine article to my to-do. AgneCheese/Wine 04:43, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
