Direction from Melbourne

[edit]

On glancing at this location on a map my initial reaction was, This place is hardly south of the city at all; I'd call the direction more nearly West.

Doing a geodesic calculation using Geoscience Australia's on-line calculator (http://www.ga.gov.au/geodesy/datums/vincenty_inverse.jsp) applied to the nominal coordinates from the respective Wikipedia articles (note that some portions of the greater Melbourne metropolitan area are hardly north of Camperdown at all) resulted in the following output:

GDA Vincenty Calculation Results (Inverse) Location: POINT I POINT II Name: Camperdown, Victoria Melboure Latitude: -38 ° 14 ' 0.00000 -37 ° 48 ' 49.00000 Longitude: 143 ° 9 ' 0.00000 144 ° 57 ' 47.00000 Forward Azimuth: 74 ° 14 ' 51.97 Reverse Azimuth: 253 ° 7 ' 51.20 Ellipsoidal Distance: 165867.871 meters

(Apologies to the reader for my lack of skill to keep Wikipedia from destroying the columnar structure of the preceeding block of plain text)

Having entered the coordinates backwards (Camperdown --> Melbourne) the figure we're looking for is the Reverse Azimuth, 253 degrees. This heading falls between the traditional compass points of West (270 deg.) and West Southwest (247.5 deg.), i.e., closer to due West than to the direction stated in the article, Southwest (225 deg.). In general parlance among people who rarely have an occasion to "box the compass" "West of WSW" probably rounds more naturally to simply "West".

Incidentally the calculated Ellipsoidal Distance (about 166 km "as the crow flies") differs significantly from the 194 km. figure cited in the article, but since the prior author's intention may have been to state distance by road, about which I have no information, that distance will not be challenged at this time.
