Notability
[edit]Please do not remove the notability template without discussion. The cited article is a link to a website for a now-defunct speedway where this team used to drive. I do not feel that this in itself sufficient to satisfy the criteria for notability of organizations:
- An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.
However, I would be quite happy with the removal of the tag if the notability of the topic of this page were demonstrated through further references, for example to newspaper reports etc. --Slashme (talk) 05:47, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
- This reference from BBC news: International boost for speedway track is the only one from a major national news source I've found so far. There are also pages on various subject-specific sites, like this Speedway News one. I'm not sure if these are sufficient to establish notability though, the coverage may not be 'sufficient'. --David Edgar (talk) 11:05, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not at all familiar with the subject, but the evidence suggests that this stub article is unlikely to grow much beyond its current state. I suspect it should be merged into a section of Speedway in the United Kingdom. --ozzmosis (talk) 21:30, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
That's pretty much my take as well. The references don't seem to establish the team as having gotten "significant" coverage in my opinion. --Slashme (talk) 05:10, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
Click the link to defunct teams and look how many there are. Are you going to tag all them? All teams who have existed in British speedway have a right to a page. Who is anyone to judge which teams should have one and which teams shouldn't?
When i get time, i will expand it to be the same size and template as the other teams —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rml123 (talk • contribs)
- Am I going to tag all of them? Probably not. I found this one while doing new page patrol, and I'm sure some defunct speedway teams were notable. As for the claim that any speedway team that ever existed in Britain has a "right" to a page on Wikipedia, I'm not sure what to make of it.
- You ask who can judge which teams should have pages. Fortunately we have procedures on Wikipedia to sort that kind of thing out. Remember, not all pages that get "notability" tags get deleted, and I am at the moment not at all sure what the consensus will be on whether this one is notable. To ensure that the consensus will be to keep this page, I strongly advise you to find references to significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. That remains the cornerstone of notability on Wikipedia. In the meantime, don't delete templates without discussion. --Slashme (talk) 16:10, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
The notability is whether the team participated in national competition i.e Elite League, British League or National League. All the defunct teams were once part of these leagues, so they all have equal right to a page. Whether some are shorter than others is irrelevant because it's all work in progress anyway. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rml123 (talk • contribs) 12:54, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I don't find that a persuasive argument. Firstly, talking about a topic as having an "equal right" to a page is problematic. Secondly, notability is not inherited: "Notability of one or more members of some group or class of subjects may or may not apply to other possible members of that group." --Slashme (talk) 14:52, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Merging
[edit]I suggest we create a list of all the teams at List of defunct motorcycle speedway teams. This would be a useful thing in itself, and would have no doubt about notability. It would also be a place where the information on the minor teams would be safe even if their pages were eventually to be deleted. I'm willing to help with this task, and should have some time this weekend. --Slashme (talk) 06:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I see you've started doing this anyway and are merging these teams into one line in a table, losing information that people have entered about each team. Have you actually consulted anyone who is interested in the subject about this notability thing? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rml123 (talk • contribs) 12:59, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
