Origins

[edit]

Years ago (~1980) I heard that "Casper the Friendly Ghost" was named after "Casper Milquetoast" (maybe spelled Caspar). Milquetoast was a comic strip character created in 1924 and named after "milk toast" because he was bland, timid, and colorless. So the creator of Casper (the ghost) is really mocking his own creation. Being a ghost, Casper could be powerful and intimidating, but chooses to be vapid and inoffensive.

Casper Milquetoast was a colorless character, but Casper the Ghost is literally colorless -- transparent, and even invisible sometimes.

(This sort of speculation doesn't belong in the main article I suppose. This is pure hearsay -- I have no sources.)

In the late-1980's I saw a comic book cover showing Casper, as a living boy being run over by a steam roller while trying to catch a baseball in the street. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 17:47, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Category - urban legends

[edit]

Why is this included in Category:Films based on urban legends ? This is not the page for the film, and what urban legend anyway ? -- Beardo 21:56, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did some searching and found a page on the history of the original owners of the Schroeppel mansion that was written by the CURRENT owners, who run it as a bed and breakfast. As it happens, the story about the Shroeppels having a little boy who drowned atage 12 are true, but he was named George Casper Schroeppel, the same as his father. I don't know what role that played in the movie or comic origins but here is the link for those wishiong to add some actual sources to the article, rather than just hearsay which pops up in newspapers every time there's a Casper anniversary. River Edge Mansion Bed & Breakfast: History Hope that helps. LiPollis (talk) 22:41, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

casper animated series or spooktacular adventures of casper

[edit]

After the success of the film in 1995, Harvey entertainment and also Fox Kids Network started a new animated series based on the new film script. In this series, called, The Spooktacular advuentures of Casper every New Character that appeared in the film Was translated into a cartoon. Stretch, Stinkie, Fatso, Kat and Doctor Harvey appeared in 2D, the voice over was played by the same actors of the movie. But it was not only the contiuation of the 1995 movie, new characters made thir apparition, like Mrs Banshee (Casper's teacher, who owned the Ghostly trio's love) and many more. The old characters of The Casper Cartoon show also ppeared, Spooky, Poil and even Nightmare, the horse. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.60.19.222 (talk) 22:28, 14 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Transparency?

[edit]

"Although scholars have debated the subject for the good part of the last century, the general consensus among experts is that Casper should be categorized as "semi-transparent", due to the fact that his opacity varies with factors such as his emotions and surroundings. Although many notable researches (see Robert Herchenston) have argued that this title is a misnomer, little evidence exists to support the completely opaque and completely transparent hypotheses, while the amount of data that suggests semi-transparency has been steadily increasing for the last 10 years."

I suspect it's vandalism. A lot of vandalism has come from that IP block (you should see how full their talk page is.) I'm removing that section. If anyone feels this in error, I encourage him or her to please politely object. Iain marcuson 04:17, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Casper in Stereotoon, "Boo Moon"

[edit]

Perhaps someone can begin a topic on Casper's page regarding his appearence in a 3-D "stereotoon" by Paramount around 1953 called "Boo Moon", as reported at the web page: Paramount- Original Titles —Preceding unsigned comment added by Photoactivist (talkcontribs) 06:09, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is an article for that cartoon, Boo Moon, now but it is not mentioned in the article. I couldn't see an easy way to stick it in since it's a later cartoon ( and many people's fave!) and there's no easy way to slide it in. Maybe as a "See Also"??LiPollis (talk) 22:44, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Trip to Hong Kong Film

[edit]

Is that a real upcoming film or is it just a false advertisement? And could it be part of the continuity of the Casper's Scare School storyline, or a season premere for season 2? 74.78.78.156 (talk) 02:07, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is no 1939 "The Friendly Ghost" book

[edit]

In several places on this page, there is reference to a 1939 children's book by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo called "The Friendly Ghost". I can find absolutely no evidence that this book ever existed. It may have been their plan to publish a children's book, but it didn't happen. Thus, this page needs to be rewritten in several places. Galenfott (talk) 15:22, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Video games

[edit]

I would like to include a section about the Casper video games. There is already an article Casper (video game) but that focuses on the games based on the 1995 film. I would like the proposed section to include the other Casper games such as Friends Around the World and Spirit Dimensions. I am wondering whether to include the section in this article or in Casper the Friendly Ghost in film considering that the games are based on characters and locations from the film series though I think the section should should focus on games based on the Casper franchise in general. Tk420 (talk) 17:24, 18 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I did created an article for Casper: Friends Around the World but it has been moved to Draft:Casper: Friends Around the World for being under sourced. If anyone can help can you please cite some reliable sources to the draft and submit it for review. Tk420 (talk) 14:46, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am wondering which games to include in the video games section remembering that Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising nor a directory of everything that ever existed. As much as I would like to include titles such as Casper Activity Center, Casper Animated Early Reader and the 2007 PC Fun Club games I thought they would only clutter this article unless a separate article for the Casper games is created. Then again their exclusion might imply bias towards console over PC games. So far I have decided to just include the titles released on the major consoles starring Casper himself. Although Wendy: Every Witch Way is on GameBoy Color there does not appear to be any mention of Casper being in it although Wendy the Good Little Witch was introduced as a companion for Casper before getting her own title. Tk420 (talk) 15:58, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In the end I decided to include one PC title (Casper: A Spirited Beginning Activity Center) as an example and I see that Wendy: Every Witch Way is already mentioned in the Wendy the Good Little Witch article and Casper does not appear in that game.Tk420 (talk) 20:59, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What is the reference to King Cole 1936 cartoon?

[edit]

The infobox says "The Friendly Ghost (1945 animated King Cole 1936 cartoon)". There is no reference to a 1936 cartoon in this article or in the linked article The Friendly Ghost. What is this talking about? This should be explained or removed. Kaltenmeyer (talk) 21:05, 15 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
