Nuclear Weapons Program

[edit]

Less than a year after the discovery of nuclear fission in Germany, academic refugees flooded into the West. As Reed & Stillman (2009, p. 11) note "much of that talent converged on Los Alamos and Chalk River." A footnote to this entry explains that "Chalk River, Canada, initially was the home of the Anglo-French nuclear weapons program." Reed, Thomas C. & Stillman, Danny B. (2009) The Nuclear Express: A Political History of the Bomb and its Proliferation. Minneapolis, MN: Zenith Press. Evidently the preceeding authors (the civic fathers and/or business council of Chalk River?) misremembered their community's substantive contribution to the history of nuclear proliferation.
