About photography restriction within the San Juan Chamula village

[edit]

- The village of Chamula does not allow photography within its city limits. This is made clear to all travelers and tourists at the entry to the village, and is usually enforced by the local police. For this reason I am deleting the picture of the church of Chamula as it obviously transcends the wishes of the village's residents. 124.168.201.82 (talk) 09:03, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is incorrect. You definitely shouldn’t take pictures inside the church though, as it is seen as deeply disrespectful and would likely get you arrested. –jacobolus (t) 00:36, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've visited the village(ride a horse from San Cristobal de las Casas) and the locals told me that I could take pictures of myself or my colleagues but not of the locals directly. Even the guy that was selling the entrance ticket for the church told us that of course inside the church it's absolutely prohibited but outside of it it is not. Local people believe that taking a picture of them can steal their soul. I agree that no picture that contains individuals has to be uploaded but a picture of the church wouldn't go against the wishes and the beliefs of the residents.
Please let me attach the link of the spanish version where the picture is present and where it says that photos are not allowed at the church's interior: San Juan Chamula —Preceding unsigned comment added by Biris (talkcontribs) 22:26, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, there are many photographs of the town square and the outside of the church, and it would be perfectly reasonable to include those on this page. Many individuals would also likely be overjoyed to have images of themselves used in a context like this (just like people from anywhere), but it would be respectful to ask first. Chamulas feel very strongly about pictures inside the church, though. –jacobolus (t) 00:34, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mirrors

[edit]

The use of mirrors on the statues inside the church is indeed a way that the locals believe to ward off evil spirits. But it also comes from an old Mayan belief and worship. When Christianity pushed itself upon the people of Chamula, it incorporated a lot of their beliefs to ease the conversion. The use of mirrors on the statues reflects sunlight, the sun being the main worship of the Mayan people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Verbal.2002 (talkcontribs) 10:47, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a source for that? –jacobolus (t) 07:18, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
