Stephan Chaplin[edit]

I've posted this on Sydney Chaplin's page as well, but does anyone know who is the mother of Sydney's son Stephan? This page lists Noëlle Adam but Sydney's page lists Susan Magnes. Vpw (talk) 06:19, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Per the Guardian obituary of Sydney Chaplin,[1] Sydney only married twice as Susan Magness (not Magnes) married Charles Chaplin, Jr. not Sydney. Susan Magness is the mother of Susan Maree Chaplin, daughter of Charles Chaplin, Jr. Thus Noëlle Adam is the mother of Stephan Chaplin, as per the LA Times obituary.[2] Cjc13 (talk) 10:08, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Susan Maree Chaplin[edit]

As mentioned on this blog[3], it seems that Susan Maree Chaplin married name is Newton and has 4 children. This seems to be confirmed by an obituary of her maternal grandmother Hazel Magness[4], which lists the children as Laurissa Maree Chaplin Newton, Allison Mary Chaplin Newton, Tyler David Chaplin Newton, and Casey Jackson Chaplin Newton. They do not seem to be of sufficient significance yet to include their names in the article. Cjc13 (talk) 18:06, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I do not see why it would be necessary to include any information on Susan Maree Chaplin's children or husband in the family tree. The blog source is not reliable enough, and the second one, while reliable, has nothing to do with Chaplin as such. The other Chaplin family members included in the family tree are ones who are either famous themselves or at least have been mentioned in magazine/newspaper articles or books – in other words, the family is ok with their names being published. I feel that since Susan Maree Chaplin does not seem to have been in any contact with the media after the early 1970s, and there are no appropriate sources for her marriage or children's names, adding information on the husband/children would be a breach of privacy. Therefore I have purposefully left them out when editing the list. TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 18:23, 2 February 2014 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
They do not have to be in it with names and all, but with every single one of Chaplin's grandchildren being in the list and a number of his great-grandchildren, I feel if there are sources they too ought to be in it. If not with their full names, then at least their existance. As in, a mention of Susan Maree having had children, and the source for that. You keep reverting the addition however. I reverted your edits because you could not provide a reliable source. There are other great-grandchildren I've left out as well: I just do not understand why anyone not connected to the family should have knowledge of the entire Chaplin family tree? Why would people even be interested in the more obscure relatives? Perhaps adding just the number of children would be fine, but I'm concerned about the lack of reliable sources. Mythic Writer, why do you insist that Discovering Chaplin is a reliable source? Sure, the writer is a very knowledgeable fan, but at the end of the day it is a fan blog. She probably learnt about the children via social media. TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 18:57, 2 February 2014 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
The obituary would be another (more then valid) source. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 19:00, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It kind of smacks of original research to me though. TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 19:02, 2 February 2014 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
Not in the slightest. An obituary is a valid source, period. They are often used as a source for those a deceased individual left behind. This one is an excellent source to use for Ms. Maree-Chaplin's children (who do not have to be named as you insist on not naming them). Including them minus the names with the obituary as a source seems like a perfect solution for us to meet mid-way in this discussion. And sourcing will not be an issue anymore. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 19:05, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Tamara Chaplin, another great-granddaughter who is not particurly well known in her own right, is also mentioned. To mention her yet leave out four other great-grandchildren seems strange. Mythic Writerlord (talk) 19:07, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a more experienced editor we could get to weigh in on this? Because I still think it might fall into the category of OR, it is such an obscure source. It also does not specify that this Susan Maree Chaplin is the same Susan Maree Chaplin we're talking about; of course I do believe it is, but theoretically it would be possible for the person to be someone else. I just don't feel it is a good enough source. As for listing Tamara, she is listed in an article specifically about the Chaplin family, published in a Swiss magazine. I would not be mixing myself in this edit war if you had a similar source for Susan Chaplin's children. TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 19:20, 2 February 2014 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
