[edit]Some suggestions for improvement as the article is expanded:
- Template:Infobox Scientist should be added
- Photograph/portrait should be added from a source with a free license, if available
- Some basic biographical information required, including any family details, circumstances of death
- Lead needs expanding to cover all aspects of the subject's life and research
- After expansion, article should be divided into appropriate subheadings
- Information on research should be expanded
- References should be expanded and preferably converted to inline format
- External links to useful online resources should be added if available

"In 1875 he began work as a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey"
[edit]U.S. Geological Survey was created by an act of Congress on March 3, 1879, so it could not employ Dutton in 1875. Avihu (talk) 20:00, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
- I have added a dubious tag for this dispute, I also ran across another possible discrepancy as the terms a-a and pahoehoe were both utilized in non-native Hawaiian language peer-reviewed journals, decades before his reported hiring at the USGS, and subsequent "coining of the two terms." speednat (talk) 23:49, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
- For this, please see [1] or Series 2, Volume 28; 1859, of the American Journal of Science by Robert C. Haskell. speednat (talk) 23:52, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
- I've modified the statement about the USGS to specify after 1879, and added a cite supporting the claim that he was part of the survey after it was organized. Confirmed that "pahoehoe" and "aa" were used in geologic publications well before Dutton; that statement I've removed entirely. --Kent G. Budge (talk) 18:27, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
