Tie Up collar

[edit]

I think that using a tie up collar for tethering needs to be qualified further if used. It seem that very amny complaints are received in the UK concerning tethering. See: Mare Strangled-Dead: http://www.care2.com/news/member/525884267/418695

RSPCA call for action on tethering cruelty: http://archive.thenorthernecho.co.uk/2002/12/6/112089.html http://www.rspca.org.uk/servlet/BlobServer?blobtable=RSPCABlob&blobcol=urlblob&blobkey=id&blobwhere=1126511567447&blobheader=application/pdf

Mention should be made of the need for at least swivels, and a chain, as well as not having the stake protruding above ground etc. Although we tether on occasions we would not even remotely consider using a tie up collar for this purpose and we camp nearby when tethering. Most travellers' ponies are tethered, as they tend to be grazed on unenclosed land – they are not normally supervised. The RSPCA and others do get aeriated about it, and (as with much else) make much of odd cases of harm, but of the hundreds I've seen I've never felt any were in danger. Having said that, I think the horse has to be used to it and suited to it – I'd certainly never tether any of our own horses like that.
The only one I can remember where I did feel upset was the other week, when I saw a nice cobby filly on a tether, whose behaviour and action made it clear that she had never run untethered, poor thing.
Nothing wrong with saying things about swivels and stakes, though we need to bear in mind that we are describing what happens, not telling people how to do things (WP:NOTMANUAL) --Richard New Forest (talk) 13:28, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Neck straps?

[edit]

Perhaps these should be mentioned here, too, as I can't find them elswhere. They are becoming popular in racing and there are also the western styles, too. Cgoodwin (talk) 06:59, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea, better than making a new article, we could do a redirect on the term "neck strap." Got a photo or two? I'm visualizing the sort of collar-like things a lot of the big ranches use here on outside broodmares in lieu of halters, but I think you're talking about something different... ?
