Little castles?

[edit]

Hey, is this the one that has little towers at either end, made of masonary, that are done up to look like funny little castles? -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:40, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It is indeed. Nothing like a bit of faux-medieval pomp to liven up a bridge. Leithp 19:48, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I thought I knew it - I just added a photo (I'm afraid I didn't think to take the whole bridge). -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:50, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Big plaque

[edit]

There's a big metal plaque (in two segments) on the north tower. The inscription (which doesn't read terribly well) is:

 CAST AT PLA S KYNASTON
 RUABON DEN BICHSHIRE

Which I suppose is meant to read "Cast at Plas Kynaston, Ruabon, Denbyshire", which doesn't make much sense. Ruabon is in Wales, a long way fron Denby, and I don't believe there ever was a Denbyshire. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 20:19, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, but there was a Denbighshire. It was cast at the Plas Kynaston works there by William Hazledine, who did a number of Telford bridge, according to the book in front of me. I'll put the casting information on the page. Leithp 20:24, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Two things to mention

[edit]

I think the article would benefit from a mention of two features of the bridge:

  • some discussion about those silly towers
  • if memory serves, at the north (village) end one has to make a very sharp right turn, as the road ran along a shelf that had been carved into the hillside.
