Cyclone Osea next razed to the ground about 95 percent of the Polynesian island of Maupiti and seriously damaged Bora Bora. In the archipelago of the Leeward Islands, some 700 homes and public infrastructures were partially or to-tally destroyed by Osea.

French troops and cleanup crews deployed in the tropical paradise of Bora Bora and another nearby island Thursday after the cyclone Osea battered French Polynesia, destroying hundreds of homes and injuring at least seven people, authorities said. Authorities said the cyclone on Wednesday damaged or destroyed up to 500 homes and public build-ings. On Bora Bora alone, more than 300 homes were damaged, 82 of them totally destroyed. On the nearby island of Maupiti, about 200 homes were destroyed, leaving 95 percent of the 1,100 residents homeless. French Polynesian President Gaston Flosse had traveled to the region to oversee the restoration of the electricity network on Maupiti. A ship carrying emergency supplies had also been sent from the capital, Papeete, while a French naval infantry regiment was sent to clear roads and an airport landing strip that was submerged during the storm.

Text of report by Radio Australia on 26th November Cyclone Osea has swept through French Polynesia, causing extensive damage on Bora Bora and other islands, although no deaths have been reported. Emergency services officials in (?Papeete) said municipal buildings and many houses on Bora Bora Island were destroyed. Parts of the main village on Bora Bora were devastated, with roads blocked by fallen trees and electricity and telephone lines cut. Two women were reported to be slightly injured. With winds of up 230 km an hour expected, the authorities have declared a storm alert through French Polynesia, although the main centre of Papeete is expected to be spared by the storm.

The eye of the storm was expected to hit on Wednesday. Sang has ordered the evacuation of all inhabitants of small islands that form a reef-like ring around Bora Bora but said he was worried by the "rashness of some families who refused to leave". The town halls and many houses on both islands were destroyed, officials reported. "Certain parts of Vaitape, the main village on Bora Bora, were devastated," said a journalist on the island. Roads were blocked and electricity and telephones cut. Two slightly injured women were the only casualties however, he said. With winds of up to 230 kilometers an hour (150 miles an hour) expected, the authorities declared a storm alert throughout the French overseas territory. Papeete was expected to be spared by the storm however, weather experts said. In Tahiti, as in the rest of the islands of the archipelago, all schools were closed, and the population has been advised not to drive. Air Moorea has stopped all flights to Tahiti, and flights to the Leeward islands have been halted by Air Tahiti. A cyclone which swept across French Polynesia has destroyed up to 95 percent of houses and infrastructure on Mau-piti island, officials here said Wednesday, citing preliminary information on the damage. In the neighbouring Bora Bora island, 30 percent of the houses were destroyed by cyclone Osea. Its city hall, hospital and a road girding it have been completely destroyed. In Maupiti, which has a population of 900, hardly any house has a roof left. There is nothing left of its schools, the city hall and the airport. "The village looks like it's been bombed," said deputy mayor Temanihi Yeon. A ship carrying supplies left Papeete for Maupiti Wednesday. French Polynesia's president, Gaston Flosse, went to arrange was on the island to oversee restoration of the electricity network. Meanwhile, Osea, which spared Tahiti and Morea islands, has weakened into a tropical storm, the meteorological services in French Polynesia said.

"...to the northeast of the Northern Cook Island: Manihiki." "...to Manhiki, in the northeastern Cook Islands." This is more suitable for a reader unfamiliar with the region.
