What should happen with this artice?

[edit]

This was created almost 15 years ago by a tendentious fringe-pushing editor trying to promote the idea of prehistoric "Greek" writing. There have only ever been a few low-quality web page snippets to source the claims about allegedly letter-like symbols, and all of them are now dead. The image we're showing is unsourced and ought to have been deleted years ago – we have no reasons to believe it actually shows what it's purported to show. Investigating a bit further, I can't find any reliable independent sourcing for any serious archaeological treatment of this particular aspect of the excavations.

What is of course notable is the archaeological site as such, the Cyclops Cave on Gioura, which is an important site of mesolithic and neolithic finds, and about which we don't have an article. Unfortunately I lack the expertise to write properly about it.

Should we just move this page to Cyclops' Cave or something similar, remove all the stuff about those particular symbols, and turn it into a decent stub about the archaeological site? Fut.Perf. 08:21, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Greek article has this as a reference:
Sampson Α. 2009, Νeolithic and Bronze Age incised symbols in the Greek area, in J. Marler and M. R. Dexter (eds), Signs of Civilization. Neolithic symbol system of Southeast Europe, 187-192, Novi Sad.

@Future Perfect at Sunrise and Error: an isolated five-page publication is an awfully thin thread to hang a Wikipedia article on. Especially when it has only ever been cited by one other person, an independent scholar, Harald Haarmann, who specializes in archaeomythology.Google Scholar The other sources in the Greek WP article say nothing useful.
So I agree with FPaS. Move to Cyclops Cave and remove the material about letter shapes.
I will be bold and go ahead and do it. --Macrakis (talk) 23:23, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
