tuckerism

[edit]

It should be mentioned that Dan Forrestal, a prominent character in Lucifer's Hammer, is Dan Alderson; but I wouldn't know how to document it. —Tamfang 00:44, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't exactly a tuckerism -- to be a tuckerism the character would have to be named Dan Alderson. I think you could put it into the article. If challenged, just say how you know, e.g. personal conversation with Jerry Pournelle or article in Apa L. Rick Norwood 13:02, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Each Dan lived in Tujunga, worked at JPL, and needed insulin; but I don't know if Larry or Jerry ever explicitly confirmed that this was not coincidence :( —Tamfang (talk) 22:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

writings

[edit]

Alderson did not write science fiction himself ... He mentioned to me one or two Known Space stories that he had at least sketched in his mind, but I don't know if he ever put anything on paper. The one I remember was about Tnuctip politics. —Tamfang 20:13, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dan was a world class procrastinator, and during the time I knew him he never put any of his stories down on paper. Charlie Jackson might know if he ever did. Rick Norwood 13:07, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dan the eponym

[edit]

He once remarked to me that it was unrealistic that in Mote the Alderson Drive and Alderson Point have the same name; it's implausible that the same person should discover the Point and how to use it. —Tamfang 06:34, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

vandalism and food

[edit]

Did he like tacos? —Tamfang (talk) 21:13, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When I was his "seeing eye person," we'd stop at Taco Bell on occasion for food. Mostly, he'd buy a small tub of beans for himself. If he ever ordered tacos, I don't remember it.--JDZeff (talk) 20:22, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Were you his only s.e.p.? If so, do you prefer not to be named in the article? —Tamfang (talk) 01:25, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There were at least two others, although I probably was there longer than any of the others. If you want to name me, I won't revert it. JDZeff (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 18:17, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

academic?

[edit]

At October 31#Births he's described as a "scientist and academic", which puzzles me a bit. —Tamfang (talk) 07:19, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I snipped that. —Tamfang (talk) 22:23, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dan was a scientist working for JPL, but never an academic. The article still has the information that he was a scientist who worked for JPL, so there is no problem with the edit mentioned above. Rick Norwood (talk) 10:42, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
